{"id":24950,"date":"2022-06-20T05:52:34","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T09:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=24950"},"modified":"2022-06-20T05:52:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T09:52:34","slug":"tesla-cars-banned-chinese-town-spying-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=24950","title":{"rendered":"Tesla cars are banned from Chinese town over spying fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tesla cars have been banned from entering Beidaihe, a Chinese resort town, for two months over concerns about spying amid a meeting of the country\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, Tesla and the Chinese government are believed to have a good relationship.<\/p>\n<p>The two came to a deal that resulted in Tesla being the first foreign automaker to fully owned a car factory in China without having to have a joint venture with a state-owned company. <\/p>\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also been known to praise the Chinese people and has refrained from criticizing the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the Chinese government has indicated clear concerns that Tesla vehicles could be involved in spying activities in its country.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the People\u2019s Liberation\u00a0Army, China\u2019s military, issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/03\/19\/tesla-cars-get-banned-chinese-military-complexes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a notice banning Tesla owners from parking their vehicles on bases and in housing complexes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The concerns appeared to be related to Tesla\u2019s use of cameras all around its vehicles and where the data is going.<\/p>\n<p>Musk even commented on the story by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/03\/22\/elon-musk-tesla-not-spy-china\/\">stating the obvious: \u201cTesla is not using its vehicles\u2019 cameras to spy on China,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0but it didn\u2019t seem to alleviate the concerns as even more government entities reportedly told employees not to park their Tesla vehicles on government property.<\/p>\n<p>Following those situations, Tesla later announced that it will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/04\/14\/tesla-promises-store-all-data-collected-in-china-locally\/\">store all data collected in China locally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/05\/25\/tesla-announces-new-data-center-china-car-bans-over-data-concerns\/\">Tesla announced a new data center in the country<\/a> in order to do just that, but it didn\u2019t seem to alleviate all concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the local traffic authorities in Beidaihe announced that all Tesla cars are going to be banned from its roads for at least two months:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"10\">\n<p>Tesla cars will be prohibited from entering the Chinese coastal district of Beidaihe, site of a secretive annual summer party leadership conclave, for at least two months starting on July 1, a local traffic police official told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beidaihe is a resort town not too far from Beijing, and it has been known to host meetings of the Chinese leadership in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>While the authorities didn\u2019t comment on the reason behind the ban, the assumption is that they don\u2019t want the cameras on Tesla vehicles to catch anything related to the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>China is Tesla\u2019s most important market in the world, and the automaker is planning to grow in the country as it doubles the production capacity at Gigafactory Shanghai.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-disclaimer-container\" readability=\"6.3518518518519\">\n<p class=\"disclaimer-affiliate\"><em>FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/about\/#affiliate\">More.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- post ad --><\/div>\n<hr\/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCcOIZzJgLCyMPILY7-1Vsdg?sub_confirmation=1\">Subscribe to Electrek on YouTube for exclusive videos<\/a> and subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrek.co\/guides\/electrek-podcast\">podcast<\/a>.<!-- youtube embed --><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Recent Videos\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_BoD7vAOwvY?playlist=J0hQzIqAUoc,QMPV2eDyuzE,N4uJiZmcYbc,P2jnnqCEoss,3eUB-HpKGK8,pV0flQZQhgM,BuY4XAcYbts,L8YyS86LxWo,x9-kqC7raTA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tesla cars have been banned from entering Beidaihe, a Chinese resort town, for two months over concerns about spying amid a meeting of the country\u2019s leadership.
