And this plant, which will be Panasonic\u2019s first in the U.S. outside of its Tesla partnership, it claims will be the largest battery plant in the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Panasonic says that the plant, which will create up to 4,000 jobs and reflect an investment of about $4 billion, will make lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles\u2014with its customers likely to be Tesla as well as other automakers planning to use cylindrical cells. Those behind the plant announcement haven&#8217;t yet replied to <em>Green Car Reports<\/em> about whether the &#8220;largest&#8221; claim relates to the area of the plant, the intended GWh annually, or both.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The announcement comes after months of reports that Panasonic was considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135229_report-panasonic-considering-oklahoma-or-kansas-for-us-battery-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a \u201cmega factory\u201d<\/a> either in Oklahoma or Kansas, aimed at \u201cmass producing new high-capacity lithium-ion batteries that significantly increase the range of EVs,\u201d according to Japan\u2019s <em>NHK<\/em> in March.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100847558_m\" title=\"Panasonic announces battery \" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Panasonic announces battery \" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"575\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/panasonic-announces-battery-mega-factory-for-kansas-city_100847558_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Panasonic announces battery <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Panasonic and Tesla broke ground in Sparks, Nevada, on a joint battery Gigafactory in 2014\u2014that at the time was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1096212_the-tesla-gigafactory-is-big-really-really-big--this-big-in-fact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breathtakingly large<\/a>\u2014with the factory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1108150_tesla-starts-battery-production-at-gigafactory-shows-it-off-to-investors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ramping up in 2017<\/a>. According to <em>Nikkei<\/em>, the Gigafactory became profitable for Panasonic starting last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Tesla and Panasonic renewed their battery commitment in 2020 but opted not to expand the Gigafactory past its current capacity of nearly 40 GWh annually.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>From Kansas City, it could be in a good place strategically\u2014for supplying Tesla in Austin, or supplying Rivian in Illinois. Panasonic will be supplying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1136467_walmart-struggling-canoo-order-for-4500-electric-vans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cells to Canoo<\/a>, which recently announced a contract with Walmart. Ford also assembles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134967_quick-spin-2022-ford-e-transit-van-makes-all-electric-fit-for-the-upfit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E-Transit vans<\/a> in the Kansas City area, and Panasonic has a history with Ford as the cell supplier for its hybrids like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1125120_review-the-2020-ford-escape-se-sport-hybrid-makes-perfect-sense-for-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Escape Hybrid<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100847561_m\" title=\"Panasonic batteries\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Panasonic batteries\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"575\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/panasonic-batteries_100847561_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Panasonic batteries<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The company hasn\u2019t confirmed exactly which cell types would be produced at the new plant\u2014and whether eventual plans there include making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134073_mass-producing-tesla-4680-cells-requires-new-techniques-panasonic-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla\u2019s 4680 format<\/a>, although it&#8217;s been widely speculated that this is the reason behind the plant&#8217;s location and timing.
