Yet the sleek sedan, confirmed for the U.S. in early 2023, shares\u00a0a lot with the equally head-turning crossover underneath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Despite the similarities, it gains a series of engineering improvements that didn\u2019t quite make the cut for the earlier-release crossover\u2014and it could, for the time being, give the electric sedan an advantage to those who want leading-edge tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Both Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 were developed together on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130487_ev-platform-hyundai-kia-genesis-bi-directional-charging-robotaxi-ready\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E-GMP platform<\/a>, with the same flat-floor battery and structural basics, plus identical battery specs and chemistry, both ready for bi-directional charging and equipped for vehicle-to-load (V2L) utility permitting you to power appliances or campsites. But the Ioniq 6 achieves a WLTP range of 379 miles (610 km), with a consumption of more than 4.4 miles per kwh on that cycle. To compare, the Ioniq 5 is rated at 315 miles (507 km) WLTP with the same pack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100847565_m\" title=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847565_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Ioniq 6<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That latter version achieves an EPA-rated 303 miles, and consumption is rated at 3.3 miles per kwh. So we might potentially see an EPA rating for the Ioniq 6 of more than 350 miles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Optimizing software and hardware, efficiency in mind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>How was Hyundai able to secure so much additional driving range from the Ioniq 6 given the same pack? In a recent session with the press about the Ioniq 6, YongWha Kim, the executive vice president for the company\u2019s Vehicle Control Development Center, said that Hyundai engineers have worked to discover the most optimal points for acceleration and braking efficiency. He also pointed to \u201cvery convenient conditioning technology\u201d for the battery pack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>It turns out that was just the start. Several innovative technologies improve both energy efficiency and range, Kim explained, both in hardware and in software. A different power module with next-generation semiconductor technology plays a role, improving energy conversion efficiency. Also the motors employ hairpin winding technology to improve efficiency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100847564_m\" title=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847564_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Ioniq 6<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cLast but not least, we worked on controls, and the transition between two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, fine-tuned to further improve vehicle energy efficiency,\u201d said Kim, who also credited the \u201cfabulous aerodynamic design,\u201d with a coefficient of drag of just 0.21.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Hyundai hasn\u2019t disclosed a weight difference yet, but we assume that has a role, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/>A little more future-proof<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The Ioniq 6 has another key piece of technology that gives it an advantage over many EVs, and the Ioniq 5, Kim confirmed: It will be the first model from Hyundai to offer over-the-air updates, and future autonomous driving capability.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100847568_m\" title=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Hyundai Ioniq 6\" width=\"640\" height=\"295\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"473\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/hyundai-ioniq-6_100847568_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Ioniq 6<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMany vehicle controllers can be updated, and we will keep improving the experience with OTA features,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Although Kim didn\u2019t connect the dots, that likely means that, as Tesla has done, there\u2019s potential to improve the efficiency and driving range, or improve charging characteristics.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan\u00a0looks very different than the Ioniq 5.
