{"id":26846,"date":"2022-07-14T09:04:02","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T13:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=26846"},"modified":"2022-07-14T09:04:02","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T13:04:02","slug":"chevy-blazer-ev-competition-electric-suv-market-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=26846","title":{"rendered":"Analysis: Chevy Blazer electric SUV fights to stand out in a crowd"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-body\">\n<p>DETROIT \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">General Motors Co&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/06\/13\/2024-chevy-blazer-ev-reveal-date\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">electric Chevy Blazer SUV<\/a> will be vital to the automaker&#8217;s effort to catch <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Tesla<\/a> Inc in the U.S. EV market, but by the time it hits showrooms next year it will be fighting a crowd of vehicles to run second in a segment dominated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/tesla-model-y-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Tesla&#8217;s Model Y<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The traffic jam over the next several years in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/electric-suv-crossover-fuel-economy-list\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">electric SUV segment<\/a> could define winners and losers in the U.S. auto market for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. electric SUV market segment is projected to more than double in size to 2 million vehicles annually by 2026, according to AutoForecast Solutions, which tracks automakers&#8217; future production plans. However, more than 90 models could be competing for very small slices of that pie, AutoForecast Solutions and other analysts said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+y\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Tesla&#8217;s Model Y<\/a> is by far the best-selling electric SUV today, and most analysts expect that to remain the case four years from now.<\/p>\n<p>LMC Automotive predicts that by 2025, the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+y\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Model Y<\/a> will account for 15.6% of a compact and mid-sized electric SUV segment of 13 vehicles, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/10\/28\/2022-ford-mustang-mach-e-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Ford&#8217;s Mustang Mach-E<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/03\/31\/2022-hyundai-ioniq-5-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Hyundai Ioniq 5<\/a>, and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/rivian\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Rivian&#8217;s<\/a> future R2S compact SUV. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/blazer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Chevy&#8217;s Blazer<\/a> is forecast to be in second place, but with only 6.6% of the segment&#8217;s sales.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1320x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/14083047\/chart9.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Bank of America analyst John Murphy warned last month in his annual &#8220;Car Wars&#8221; assessment of future models that automakers risk saturating the market with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">crossover utility vehicles<\/a>, or <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">CUVs<\/a>, both electric and conventional.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The profitability of the SUV segment is likely to decline materially over time as\u00a0competition intensifies,&#8221; Murphy wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Facing this competitive challenge, Chevrolet <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">dealers<\/a> will start taking customer reservations for the electric <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/blazer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Blazer<\/a> on July 18, months ahead of the promised Spring 2023 arrival of the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Sowers, owner of Jim Butler Auto group, which includes three <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Chevrolet<\/a> stores in Missouri, said customers are already asking about the electric Blazer, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/16\/2024-chevy-equinox-ev-lt-interior-shown\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">electric Equinox SUV<\/a> that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">GM<\/a> has said will start at $30,000 \u2014 about half the price of a Model Y. Sowers expects the Blazer&#8217;s price to start at $36,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s interesting for me because I&#8217;m in the Midwest, definitely not the early adopters of anything. But I will tell you that I think people are excited about not just the Blazer but also the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/equinox\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Equinox<\/a>,&#8221; Sowers said.<\/p>\n<p>GM Chief Executive <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/mary+barra\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Mary Barra<\/a> is aiming to deliver 400,000 new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">electric vehicles<\/a> in North America in 2022 and 2023. Successful launches for the Blazer and the Equinox will be essential to hitting that goal.<\/p>\n<p\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-body\">\n<p>So far this year, GM is trailing not just Tesla but <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Ford<\/a> and Hyundai in the U.S. electric vehicle market. GM&#8217;s best-selling EV, the Chevy Bolt, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/02\/16\/chevy-bolt-production-april-restart\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">out of production for months<\/a> because of a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> recall.
