This car first hit Volvo showrooms in 1982, and the initial models were all upscale 760 sedans with the same <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/V6_PRV_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">PRV V6<\/a> engine that powered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/03\/17\/delorean-car-club-video-saint-patricks-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the DeLorean DMC-12<\/a>. The cheaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/11\/23\/junkyard-gem-volvo-740-turbo-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">four-cylinder 740<\/a> appeared in North America for the 1984 model year, which didn&#8217;t stop Volvo from selling a 760 with a turbocharged four-banger in the same showrooms. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve got for today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a>, a first-model year Volvo 760 Turbo in <a href=\"http:\/\/andersensales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">a Colorado self-service yard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102906\/29-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, the 740\/760\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2020\/10\/junkyard-find-1989-volvo-780-turbo-bertone-coupe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">780<\/a> not only didn&#8217;t replace the 240\/260, it didn&#8217;t even <em>outlast<\/em> it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/06\/01\/junkyard-gem-1993-volvo-240-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">240 sales continued all the way through 1993<\/a>, while the 760\/780 and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/740\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">740<\/a> got the axe in 1990 and 1992, respectively (to be fair, the later 900 Series was based on the 700 Series and was available new here until the very last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/03\/26\/junkyard-gem-1998-volvo-s90\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">1998 S90<\/a>s and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/07\/06\/junkyard-gem-1997-volvo-v90\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">V90<\/a>s were sold).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102854\/13-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>During the 1984 model year, American Volvo shoppers could choose between a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hagerty.com\/media\/buying-and-selling\/definitive-volvo-240-buyers-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">240 Turbo<\/a> (in two-door, four-door, and wagon forms) or the 760 sedan with their choice of oil- or gasoline-burning turbocharged engines. Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1817331\/turbo-badging-most-turbocharged-decade-1980s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the 1980s truly were The Turbo Decade<\/a>. For 1985, a turbocharged version of the 740 sedan was added to the lineup, though that was also the final year here for the 240 Turbo.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102856\/15-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This engine is a 2.3-liter &#8220;red block&#8221; four-cylinder, rated at 160 horsepower when new. That was two fewer horsepower than the more angrily boosted 2.2 in the 240 Turbo that year.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102904\/27-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 740\/760 scaled in at just a few more pounds than the 240, though it\u00a0<em>seemed<\/em> bigger at a glance.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102850\/08-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Supposedly you could get a U.S.-market 760 Turbo with a four-speed manual transmission, but every example I&#8217;ve ever seen had the four-speed automatic.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/27102848\/06-1984-Volvo-760-Turbo-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one racked up just a bit over 200,000 miles during its life.
