{"id":28818,"date":"2022-08-10T00:03:49","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T04:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=28818"},"modified":"2022-08-10T00:03:49","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T04:03:49","slug":"tesla-factory-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=28818","title":{"rendered":"Tesla discloses lobbying to set up factory in Canada | Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Tesla<\/a> Inc is lobbying the Ontario government as part of an effort to set up an &#8220;advanced manufacturing facility&#8221; in Canada, a filing by the electric-vehicle maker to the province&#8217;s Office of the Integrity Commissioner showed.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s Canadian unit is working with the government to &#8220;identify opportunities for industrial facility permitting reforms,&#8221; the amended filing from July 18 said.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla as well as the office of Ontario&#8217;s minister for economic development, job creation and trade did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne had said in May there were &#8220;very active discussions with a number of players&#8221; to develop an EV supply chain in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has been ramping up production, with Chief Executive <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/elon+musk\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Elon Musk<\/a> last week speaking half in jest to shareholders yelling &#8220;Canada&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;We&#8217;ve got a lot of Canadas, I&#8217;m half Canadian, maybe I should.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the company &#8220;might be able&#8221; to announce a new factory later this year and it could ultimately have 10-12 gigafactories. Tesla manufactures vehicles from two factories in the United States and one each in Germany and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. electric-vehicle makers are also looking to source materials and build cars closer home to diversify supply chains and lower their dependence on China, the world&#8217;s largest supplier of EV <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\" rel=\"noopener\">batteries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Such efforts could gain pace from a $430-billion bill approved on Sunday by the U.S. Senate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/08\/08\/automakers-complain-about-senate-bill-ev-tax-credit\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">restricts automakers from using Chinese-made materials<\/a> by phasing in required percentages of North American-sourced battery components.<\/p>\n<p>After 2023, vehicles with batteries that have Chinese parts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/08\/08\/which-top-selling-electric-cars-qualify-for-senate-ev-tax-credit\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">could not receive the credit<\/a>, while critical minerals also face limitations on sourcing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tesla Inc is lobbying the Ontario government as part of an effort to set up an &#8220;advanced manufacturing facility&#8221; in Canada, a filing by the electric-vehicle maker to the province&#8217;s Office of the Integrity Commissioner showed.
