The <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1969_Ford\/1969_Ford_Torino_and_Fairlane_Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Torino<\/a> had its <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1969%20Mercury\/1969-Mercury-Montego-Booklet\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Montego<\/a> sibling, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1993-Ford\/1993-Ford-Crown-Victoria-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Crown Victoria<\/a> had <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1992-Mercury\/1992-Mercury-Grand-Marquis-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the Grand Marquis<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/10\/10\/junkyard-gem-1970-mercury-cougar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Cougar<\/a> was based on everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/5363126\/1972-mercury-cougar-xr7-has-used-up-all-nine-lives-now-faces-crusher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the Mustang<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/09\/28\/junkyard-gem-1999-mercury-cougar-in-its-final-parking-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the Mondeo<\/a>, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/01\/13\/junkyard-gem-1985-ford-tempo-gl-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the Ford Tempo compact<\/a>, a Mercury version\u00a0<em>had<\/em> to be created. This was <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1992-Mercury\/1992-Mercury-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1992_Mercury_Full_Line-08.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the Topaz<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/1983\/0603\/060331.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">the official launch of both cars taking place<\/a> on the deck of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warhistoryonline.com\/war-articles\/uss-intrepid.html?firefox=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit<\/a>. You can&#8217;t make this stuff up!<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164020\/03-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Tempo\/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be <em>much different<\/em> if <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Ford<\/a> had only put <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/how-about-a-straight-eight-powered-ford-tempo-t-drive-5444277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">the amazing straight-eight &#8220;T-Drive&#8221; Tempaz powertrain<\/a> into production) and didn&#8217;t have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/corolla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Toyota Corolla<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a35846842\/apocalyptic-1992-nissan-sentra-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Nissan Sentra<\/a>. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164025\/10-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;d expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I&#8217;m patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this <a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1987-ford-tempo-all-wheel-drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">means<\/a> an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive <a href=\"https:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1987-mercury-topaz-gs-4wd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">version<\/a> or at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/01\/13\/junkyard-gem-1985-ford-tempo-gl-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">a very early model in super-clean condition<\/a>. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no <em>ordinary<\/em> junkyard Mercury.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164033\/18-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1984_Mercury\/1984-Mercury-Topaz-Brochure\/slides\/1984_Mercury_Topaz-10-11.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">referring to this stuff as just &#8220;cloth&#8221;<\/a> in all the brochures I could find. That&#8217;s too bad, because <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercury\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Mercurys<\/a> had cool names for upholstery (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/07\/20\/junkyard-gem-1955-mercury-montclair-coupe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">Chromatex<\/a>) in the old days.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164028\/12-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164029\/13-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we&#8217;ll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164042\/30-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The body is very straight, but there&#8217;s some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164040\/27-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This grille bar suggests <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1992-Mercury\/1992-Mercury-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1992_Mercury_Full_Line-02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">the illuminated bar on the (Taurus-based) Sable<\/a>, but it didn&#8217;t really light up. Still, it made the Topaz look more ornate than the Tempo.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164035\/20-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_Vulcan_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">pushrod Vulcan V6<\/a> out of the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/taurus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">Taurus<\/a>\/<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercury\/sable\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">Sable<\/a> became available in the Tempaz for the 1992-1994 model years, but this car has <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_HSC_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">the HSC straight-four<\/a> that went into nearly every Tempaz (and some <a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1986-ford-taurus-mt-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">very slow Tauruses<\/a>). The HSC was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1827301\/cut-down-engine-week-ford-hsc-i4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">two-thirds of the 200-cubic-inch Thriftmaster straight-six<\/a> of the early 1960s, so it wasn&#8217;t exactly cutting-edge technology for the middle 1990s. This one was rated at 96 horsepower.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164031\/15-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Tempaz had a manual transmission as base equipment for its entire production run (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">four-on-the-floor<\/a> for 1984 and then a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a37089195\/what-will-be-the-last-new-car-with-a-five-speed-manual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">five-speed<\/a> for the 1985-1993 cars), and numerous penny-pinching buyers of early Tempos got the three-pedal rig. Car shoppers seeking the prestige of a Mercury in the driveway tended to prefer automatics, and that&#8217;s what this car has. Price tag for this three-speed slushbox: 563 bucks, or $1,170 in 2022 dollars).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164032\/16-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The MSRP for the &#8217;93 Topaz GS sedan \u2014 by this time, the mid-grade GS trim level was the only one you could get\u2014 was $10,976, while its Tempo counterpart started at $10,442 ($22,805 and $21,695 today, respectively). The air conditioning and cassette deck you see here cost extra, of course.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/22164050\/35-1993-Mercury-Topaz-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You could get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KrIkgFxctQA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">a new Nissan Sentra XE four-door<\/a> for $11,190 in 1993, and it had a 14-horsepower edge over the HSC-equipped Topaz. The front-wheel-drive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q4grI4GxyHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:36;\">Subaru Loyale sedan<\/a> was just $10,478, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/06\/17\/junkyard-gem-1994-dodge-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:37;\">Dodge Spirit sedan<\/a> cost $11,941 \u2026 and then you could roll the dice on a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ftem2nSx7H8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:38;\">Isuzu Stylus<\/a> sedan ($9,599) or get extremely sensible with a (Corolla-based) Geo <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/prizm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:39;\">Prizm<\/a> LSi sedan for $10,630.
