This rig was known as <a href=\"https:\/\/uboat.net\/technical\/schnorchel.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">the Schnorchel<\/a>, and a similar setup can be used on modern <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">trucks<\/a> to keep the engine from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/02\/24\/britain-flooding-truck-high-water-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">inhaling water<\/a> or dust during river-fording or off-roading. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/02\/10\/2022-ford-bronco-everglades-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">you can buy a new Ford Bronco with a factory schnorchel<\/a> (or snorkel, if you prefer the English spelling) right now. Purchasers of new Suzuki Swifts, however, had no such factory \u2014 or even <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/aftermarket\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">aftermarket<\/a> \u2014 option, and so the final owner of today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> had to fabricate one using hardware-store components.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/15170551\/18-1998-Suzuki-Swift-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is a fully functional air-intake snorkel, made from PVC pipe and entering the engine compartment via not-so-precision holes sliced through the fender and inner fender.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/15170546\/12-1998-Suzuki-Swift-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once in the engine compartment, the pipe connects directly to the engine&#8217;s throttle body. Sure, for serious underwater use you need to waterproof the distributor plus any sensitive electrical components, not to mention find some way to keep water from getting into transmission vents and the like.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/07\/15170535\/03-1998-Suzuki-Swift-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We can assume, however, that this snorkel wasn&#8217;t intended for sustained underwater use. It appears that you could buy a new Cultus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ea4gfS-03CY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">with Margalla badges<\/a>) in Pakistan as recently as a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2020\/12\/27124854\/99-1996-Suzuki-Swift-Slokyo-Drift-in-Colorado-Junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first interestingly modified second-generation Swift I&#8217;ve found in a Denver-area car graveyard in recent years. Perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/01\/03\/junkyard-gem-1996-suzuki-swift-slokyo-drift-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the &#8220;Slokyo Drift&#8221; 1996 Swift<\/a> was modified by the same person.
