{"id":30324,"date":"2022-08-29T12:03:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T16:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=30324"},"modified":"2022-08-29T12:03:54","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T16:03:54","slug":"1136969_toyota-hydrogen-fuel-cell-tech-could-help-smooth-the-grid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=30324","title":{"rendered":"Toyota and DOE look at how hydrogen fuel-cell tech could help smooth the grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Toyota announced last week that it\u2019s collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to provide a new proof point for hydrogen fuel-cell tech\u2014in a megawatt-scale, multitasking power-generation package that might potentially be used for renewable energy storage and smoothing the grid.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The project will include a consideration of how hydrogen might be created with energy from solar and wind sources, then stored, and used to generate electricity when needed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The three-year, $6.5 million project is being funded by the DOE and is aiming to \u201cbuild, install, and evaluate\u201d a 1-megawatt proton exchange membrane fuel-cell system at NREL\u2019s Colorado campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s part of the DOE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/h2scale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"7a32483a29191b161f\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/span><\/a> initiative, aiming \u201cto advance affordable hydrogen production, transport, storage, and utilization.\u201d It\u2019s not as controversial as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135889_hydrogen-hubs-dirty-as-coal-clean-hydrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrogen hubs<\/a>, for trucking and more, that were written into the 2021 infrastructure law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As Toyota points out, the system for the power plant that will be fully commissioned by the end of the year, generates about 15 times the power of a previous NREL demonstrator. Or that&#8217;s nearly 9,000 times the automotive-grade fuel cell stack used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131268_toyota-claims-the-2021-mirai-fuel-cell-car-cleans-the-air-calls-it-minus-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota Mirai<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In addition to the 1-mw fuel-cell generator, the project includes a 600-kg hydrogen storage system (more than 100 times the storage in the Mirai) and a 1.25-mw PEM electrolyzer. It has for years been using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130603_updated-fuel-cell-tech-boosts-toyota-semi-project-to-300-miles-at-full-load\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel-cell semis<\/a> for Southern California port duty, and in an expansion of plans to use the tech for trucks and industrial uses it announced that it will make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133367_toyota-will-make-hydrogen-fuel-cell-modules-in-the-us-starting-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel-cell modules in the U.S.<\/a> starting in 2023, in Kentucky.
