I&#8217;m a regular at such fine mobile eating establishments as <a href=\"https:\/\/gotruckster.com\/food-truck\/tacos-el-huequito\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Tacos el Huequito<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mikes2kitchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Mikes2Kitchen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yuanwonton\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Yuan Wonton<\/a>, and I&#8217;m pleased that <a href=\"https:\/\/brutalpoodledenver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">South Denver&#8217;s metal-centric Brutal Poodle bar<\/a> now has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westword.com\/restaurants\/the-brutal-poodle-grub-gremlin-13869501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">its own food truck<\/a>. The sad part about food <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">trucks<\/a>, however, is that they&#8217;re\u00a0<em>trucks<\/em>, and sometimes old trucks wear out and have to be sent to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/12\/auction-to-crusher-12-weeks-in-the-lives-of-two-cars-at-a-self-service-wrecking-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the knacker&#8217;s yard<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a once-ebullient Denver food truck that met that fate and now resides in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">a self-service yard just south of the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03120042\/98-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This truck started out as a member of the extended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbsideclassic.com\/blog\/cc-capsule\/cc-capsule-1993-utilimaster-umc-aeromate-step-van-the-aardvark-of-vans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">UMC Aeromate<\/a> family, built in Indiana by the company now known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilimaster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Utilimaster<\/a>. I couldn&#8217;t find much useful information about this particular model, which seems to have the windshield and nose of one of the many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplewave.com\/auction\/210908\/item\/DN1890\/1994-Europa-RVs-RV-Kansas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">UMC-based RVs<\/a> instead of the typical long snout of most Aeromates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113605\/08-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>What I\u00a0<em>do<\/em> know is that it&#8217;s based on an early-1990s Chrysler <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/minivan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">minivan<\/a> chassis, complete with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chrysler_3.3_%26_3.8_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">3.3-liter V6 engine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chrysler%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1992-Trucks-and-Vans\/1992%20Chrysler%20Plymouth%20Minivans\/slides\/1992%20Chrysler-Plymouth%20Minvans-10-11.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the instrument cluster out of a 1992 Plymouth Voyager<\/a>. The 3.3 made 150 horsepower in 1993, and it was installed in Chrysler minivans through 2010.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113640\/42-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>150 horses (and 180 pound-feet) isn&#8217;t much for a big truck packed with a complete kitchen, and the strain on a Torqueflite automatic transmission designed for a 3,400-pound minivan must have been severe. I think the drivetrain on this 29-year-old truck just couldn&#8217;t hold up under the demands of a hard-working crew of sandwich entrepreneurs in the extreme weather and traffic conditions of High Plains Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113629\/30-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The county licensing sticker expired in late 2019, so it took a couple of years for this UMC to reach this place.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113631\/32-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t weep for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lilbigsand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the Little Big Sandwich Truck<\/a>, though, because the LBST Empire upgraded to a newer, GM-built <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/school+bus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">school bus<\/a> a few years ago and appears to be slinging sandwiches outside Denver-area breweries to this day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113625\/23-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The headlights and marker lights clearly came from a <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chrysler%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1989-Trucks-and-Vans\/1989-Dodge-Caravan-Brochure\/slides\/1989_Dodge_Caravan-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">late-first-generation Dodge Caravan\/Plymouth Voyager<\/a> (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/07\/04\/junkyard-gem-1994-dodge-caravan-with-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">second-generation Chrysler minivans<\/a>, which debuted in the 1991 model year, got different noses). The grille looks like typical RV equipment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/03113619\/18-1993-UMC-Aeromate-Food-Truck-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2014\/01\/junkyard-find-1974-am-general-fj-8a-ice-cream-truck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">seen a few<\/a> junked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2014\/12\/junkyard-find-1998-ford-aerostar-ice-cream-truck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">ice cream trucks<\/a> over the years, but somehow a sandwich truck with a stenciled snorkeling dachshund seems sadder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><style><![CDATA[.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }]]><\/style>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n <lite-youtube videoid=\"aXwas1JniL4\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite things about living in the Mile High City is all the food trucks roaming the neighborhoods here.
