(AP)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 President Joe<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> Biden <\/span>plans to attend the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Detroit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Auto <\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Show <\/span>later this month as his administration touts a rising number of investments in electric vehicles and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be there. I&#8217;m a car guy \u2014 as you kind of noticed,&#8221;<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Biden\u00a0<\/span>said at an event. The Commerce Department on Friday awarded $52.2 million to a<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Detroit\u00a0<\/span>regional program called the &#8220;Global Epicenter of Mobility&#8221; to help Michigan\u2019s<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0auto<\/span>motive sector transition to EVs and<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0auto<\/span>nomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Department said despite more than $5 billion in private investment the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Detroit\u00a0<\/span>region\u2019s &#8220;prospects are threatened by rising global competition in the electric and<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0auto<\/span>nomous vehicle market, by the rapid pace of innovation in new mobility solutions and by an aging workforce that needs continuous reskilling to keep up with new products and technologies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The White House has heralded a string of recent major investment announcements from U.S. and foreign<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0auto<\/span>makers to build new battery plants and electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>This month&#8217;s<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Detroit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Auto <\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Show <\/span>will be the first time the event has been held since 2019. The<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> North American International Auto Show<\/span>, open to the public from Sept. 17 to Sept. 25, is expected to focus on the shift to EVs.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Biden\u00a0<\/span>wants at least 50% of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">new vehicles<\/a> sold by 2030 to be electric or plug-in electric <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">hybrids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As vice president in the Obama administration,<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Biden\u00a0<\/span>attended the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> Detroit<\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">show\u00a0<\/span>and was a strong advocate of the 2008-09 bailouts of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">GM<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chrysler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Chrysler<\/a>, which is now part of Stellantis NV.<\/p>\n<p>EV battery makers are looking to increase U.S. production as the country implements stricter regulation and tightens tax credit eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Japan&#8217;s<\/a> Honda Motor Co said on Monday it will build a new $4.4 billion lithium-ion battery plant for electric vehicles in the United States with Korean battery supplier LG Energy Solution Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>Also this week, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Toyota<\/a> said it will boost its planned investment in a new U.S. battery plant from $1.29 billion to $3.8 billion, partly in response to rising consumer demand for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">General Motors Co<\/a> and LG Energy Solution said this week production had begun at their $2.3 billion joint-venture battery production plant in Ohio.
