Google Maps can now provide the \u201cmost fuel-efficient route\u201d possible if you specify your car\u2019s engine type, while eco-friendly routing is coming to all of Europe.<\/p>\n

Google launched eco-friendly routing in Maps earlier this year for the United States, Canada, and Germany<\/a> to highlight directions that use less fuel. A \u201cMost fuel-efficient\u201d leaf badge appears, with the app preferring that route \u201cwhen arrival times are similar.\u201d You can see more details about the choice and get a brief explanation.<\/p>\n

This feature can be disabled<\/a> from the overflow menu in the directions page > \u201cRoute options\u201d to always use the fastest option. It\u2019s meant to \u201csave money on fuel and reduce carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since launching in the U.S.<\/a> and Canada<\/a>, it\u2019s already estimated to have helped remove more than half a million metric tons of carbon emissions \u2014 equivalent to taking 100,000 fuel-based cars off the road.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Eco-friendly routing is rolling out starting today to nearly 40 countries across Europe.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as we previously reported<\/a>, you can make Google Maps eco-friendly routing even more fuel efficient by specifying your engine type: gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric vehicle (EV). This feature is rolling out over the coming weeks in the United States, Canada, and Europe and can be accessed by going into \u201cRoute options\u201d and adding an \u201cEngine type.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For example, diesel engines are usually more efficient at higher speeds than petrol or gas engines, while hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in stop-and-go traffic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

To get the \u201cmost accurate fuel or energy efficiency estimates,\u201d Google used \u201cinsights from the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and data from the European Environment Agency.\u201d\u00a0Combining these data with Google Maps driving trends, the company developed \u201cadvanced machine learning models trained on the most popular engine types in a given region.\u201d<\/p>\n
