That was one of the many announcements out of Apple&#8217;s event Wednesday in Cupertino, Calif., where the company showcased its latest technical and service innovations.<\/p>\n<p>Google has offered car crash detection for some time on certain Pixel smartphone models, and the newly announced <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/07\/apple-unveils-the-iphone-14-and-iphone-14-plus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/07\/this-is-the-iphone-14-pro\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">iPhone 14 Pro<\/a> have it. But the Series 8 is one of \u2014 if not the only \u2014 smartwatch on the market with the feature.<\/p>\n<p>Car crash detection on the Series 8 \u2014 which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-wants-iphones-to-detect-car-crashes-auto-dial-911-11635768001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">rumored<\/a> late last year \u2014 is enabled by a new three-axis gyroscope and &#8220;high g-force&#8221; accelerometer that samples data four times faster than the previous generation (and up to 256 Gs of force). Leveraging an algorithm running on the device, along with the barometer, the Series 8 can detect crashes in most types of vehicles and automatically notify emergency contacts and services if the user doesn&#8217;t respond within 10 seconds, Apple said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2389412\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 2890px;\">\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/07204154\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-07-at-8.41.30-PM.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n  <\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2389412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Image credits:<\/strong> Apple<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Apple explains it thusly in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20220907005962\/en\/Apple-Reveals-Apple-Watch-Series-8-and-the-New-Apple-Watch-SE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">press release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>To create the [crash detection] algorithm, data was collected from these new motion sensors at professional crash test labs with common passenger cars in simulated real-world accidents, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact and rollovers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to motion data, crash detection uses the barometer, GPS and the microphone on [a paired] iPhone as inputs to detect the unique patterns that can indicate whether a severe crash has taken place \u2026 When a severe car crash is detected, the emergency services call interface will appear on Apple Watch, as it is most likely to be in closer proximity to the user, while the call is placed through iPhone if it is in range for the best possible connection.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"piano-inline-promo\">\n  \u00a0\n<\/div>\n<p>Apple reportedly used data shared anonymously by iPhone and Apple Watch users to develop the aforementioned algorithm.
