{"id":31194,"date":"2022-09-11T00:03:51","date_gmt":"2022-09-11T04:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31194"},"modified":"2022-09-11T00:03:51","modified_gmt":"2022-09-11T04:03:51","slug":"uaw-strike-stellantis-indiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31194","title":{"rendered":"UAW workers strike at Stellantis casting plant in Indiana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DETROIT \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/uaw-unions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">United Auto Workers<\/a> union members went on strike Saturday at the Stellantis casting plant in Indiana, citing health and safety issues including the company&#8217;s alleged refusal to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">repair<\/a> and replace the plant\u2019s air conditioning and heating systems.<\/p>\n<p>The 35-acre plant in Kokomo makes parts used in the powertrains of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chrysler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Chrysler<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Dodge<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jeep\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Jeep<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ram\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">RAM<\/a> vehicles and a long-term strike could affect vehicle assembly lines across North America.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis says production had not been scheduled for this weekend and it hoped to resume negotiations as soon as possible on a contract with striking <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/uaw-unions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">UAW<\/a> Local 1166.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Stellantis said it was committed \u201cto providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. After bargaining in good faith for two days and presenting an offer we believed addressed the union\u2019s concerns, we are disappointed by the UAW\u2019s decision to walk out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 1,200-worker plant, Kokomo Casting, is the world&#8217;s largest die cast facility, according to Stellantis. It makes aluminum parts for components including transmissions and engine blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The UAW local complained in a statement that Stellantis \u201cclaims it has no money to meet its membership&#8217;s basic needs while \u201dmaking record profits and investing billions in a new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> plant across the street.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UAW local president David Willis did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. A person who answered the phone at union offices said he was preparing for a resumption in negotiations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.stellantisnorthamerica.com\/newsrelease.do?id=328&amp;mid=\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">The casting plant is to be retooled<\/a> to produce engine blocks for hybrid-electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-indiana-north-america-kokomo-600a52ff5d8f2be081fa784c55a85611\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">In May, Stellantis announced a $2.5 billion joint venture with Samsung<\/a> to build an <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">electric vehicle<\/a> battery factory in Kokomo that is to employ 1,400 workers.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis, formed last year with the merger of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/fiat\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Fiat<\/a> Chrysler and France\u2019s PSA <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/peugeot\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Peugeot<\/a>, had said it would build two electric vehicle battery factories in North America.
