{"id":31500,"date":"2022-09-15T09:03:44","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T13:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31500"},"modified":"2022-09-15T09:03:44","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T13:03:44","slug":"1137165_35-states-get-the-green-light-for-7-5-billion-national-ev-charging-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31500","title":{"rendered":"35 states get the green light for $7.5 billion national EV charging network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">President Biden, in a speech at the Detroit Auto Show Wednesday, confirmed that the federal government is releasing a first round of funding to 35 states to start installing EV charging hardware on the way to a 500,000-charger U.S. network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pointed out in a release, the 35 states given the green light are represented by a mix of Republican and Democratic governors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Surprisingly, all 50 states turned in their homework on time. By August 1, states had to submit plans for their spending on the project to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy. The DOT confirmed on August 2 that every state had submitted plans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100785862_m\" title=\"EVgo charging station overhead view\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"EVgo charging station overhead view\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"681\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/evgo-charging-station-overhead-view_100785862_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>EVgo charging station overhead view<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program essentially has two facets: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135052_federal-ev-charging-network-5-billion-over-five-years-now-states-have-to-submit-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deployment of EV charging infrastructure<\/a>, and the formation of \u201can interconnected network to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability\u201d of charging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">NEVI is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law enacted in November 2021, and it\u2019s one of the two big funding buckets that adds up to the initial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134092_infrastructure-bill-7-5b-toward-nationwide-network-of-500-000-ev-chargers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$7.5 billion for the project<\/a>. The other $2.5 billion is a discretionary grant program aiming to tackle rural charging and underserved\/disadvantaged communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/environment\/alternative_fuel_corridors\/resources\/nprm_evcharging_unofficial.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laid out<\/a> in June for the $5 billion program, states needed to draw out their initial routes primarily along highway routes designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. That led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/environment\/nevi\/ev_deployment_plans\/index.cfm?format=list#map\">plans with widely varied levels of detail<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The program funnels $1.46 billion in funding over five calendar years\u20142022 through 2026. Each state gets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/bipartisan-infrastructure-law\/evs_5year_nevi_funding_by_state.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allocated a different amount<\/a> toward the EV infrastructure under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, based around a federal funding formula. Due to that, state amounts range up to California\u2019s nearly $384 million total and Texas\u2019 $407 million over the five years. After this first large batch, states will get approved \u201con a rolling basis,\u201d according to the Department of Energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe are reviewing the remaining plans and on track to finish the process by our target date of September 30, if not sooner,\u201d said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Stephanie Pollack, in a release. \u201cOur shared work to bring
