How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1864486\/suckas-side-106-years-oldsmobiles-american-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">deeply embedded<\/a> is the Olds 88 in American history? The very first rock-n-roll song ever recorded, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BIKrC555muk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">by Ike Turner in 1951<\/a>, had the 88 and its &#8220;Rocket&#8221; V8 engine as its subject matter. After the last <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1968_Oldsmobile\/1968_Oldsmobile_Prestige_Brochure\/slides\/1968_Oldsmobile_Prestige-22-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">1968 Delmont 88s<\/a> were sold, all 88s became <em>Delta<\/em> 88s. This car scaled in at 4,334 pounds, about 350 pounds heavier than its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/impala\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Impala<\/a> counterpart that year and about the same as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2022-Chevrolet-Traverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">2022 Chevy Traverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094553\/24-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Under the hood, we find <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1969%20Oldsmobile\/1969%20Oldsmobile%20Performance\/slides\/69-oldsperfo-01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">Dr. Oldsmobile&#8217;s<\/a> legendary 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) pushrod V8, a smooth runner that was the largest-displacement <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/oldsmobile\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">Oldsmobile<\/a> engine of the modern era (car shoppers in 1912 could buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hemmings.com\/stories\/article\/autocracy-of-the-avenues-1912-oldsmobile-autocrat-roadster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">a new Olds with a straight-six displacing 706 cubic inches<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094551\/17-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Power was down compared to 1970, partly due to compression ratios being lowered to comply with new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/emissions+standards\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">emission standards<\/a> and partly due to the transition from somewhat stretchy gross engine-power numbers (sometimes fudged upward to make vehicles seem faster, sometimes fudged downward to make <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-insurance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">insurance<\/a> rates cheaper) <a href=\"https:\/\/ateupwithmotor.com\/terms-technology-definitions\/gross-versus-net-horsepower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">to strict SAE net-power standards<\/a>. Still, this 455 was rated at 280 horsepower and an ocean-liner-like 360 pound-feet of torque. It&#8217;s telling that the 1971 Oldsmobile brochure <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1971%20Oldsmobile\/1971_Oldsmobile_Prestige_Brochure\/slides\/1971_Oldsmobile_Prestige-34-35.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">doesn&#8217;t mention horsepower at all<\/a>, just torque. Believe it or not, you could get this car with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">three-on-the-tree manual transmission<\/a> from the factory, though this one has an automatic; starting in 1972, all Delta 88s came with automatic transmissions as base equipment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30135109\/97-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-brochure-Photo-courtesy-of-The-Old-Car-Manual-Project.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oldsmobile made some suspension adjustments for 1971, allegedly to counter the G-forces of cornering while still maintaining a smooth Oldsmobilesque ride. This was called &#8220;G-Ride&#8221; and we can assume that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JnM8eZQy6cI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">inspired rappers a quarter-century later<\/a>. Oldsmobile songs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1864486\/suckas-side-106-years-oldsmobiles-american-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">have been with us since the days of the 1901 Curved-Dash<\/a>, and they continue to be created 18 years after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a2147171\/junkyard-treasure-final-500-edition-2004-oldsmobile-alero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">the final Oldsmobiles<\/a> left Lansing Car Assembly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094601\/33-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car was in good shape when I found it, no rust to speak of and an interior much nicer than you&#8217;d expect after 51 years. It was full of papers that suggested the last time it was registered was the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094547\/12-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It included the 1965 yearbook for the DI MU DA Dance Club.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094544\/10-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The original owner&#8217;s manuals and <a href=\"https:\/\/gmauthority.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/what-is-a-general-motors-protect-o-plate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:36;\">Protect-O-Plate<\/a> were still in the car. I kept the Protect-O-Plate, which now lives on my garage wall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/08\/30094558\/29-1971-Oldsmobile-Delta-88-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Even though it&#8217;s a hardtop in easily restorable condition, a big four-door like this isn&#8217;t particularly valuable nowadays.
