{"id":31736,"date":"2022-09-19T12:03:41","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T16:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31736"},"modified":"2022-09-19T12:03:41","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T16:03:41","slug":"loop-energy-hydrogen-fuel-cell-efficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31736","title":{"rendered":"Loop Energy says its new hydrogen fuel cell is more efficient than diesel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hydrogen <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+cell\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">fuel cell<\/a> maker Loop Energy said on Sunday that its latest cell system can deliver better <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+economy\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">fuel economy<\/a> than a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/diesel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">diesel<\/a> engine at current price levels.<\/p>\n<p>The Burnaby, British Columbia-based company said that \u2014 based on a pan-European diesel cost of $1.91 per liter on Sept. 5 and $10 per kg of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/hydrogen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">hydrogen<\/a> \u2014 a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">truck<\/a> could travel just over 111 miles (179 km) on $100 worth of fuel using its new S1200 hydrogen fuel cell system versus a little over 109 miles for an equivalent diesel truck.<\/p>\n<p>As the auto industry makes the shift to zero-emission <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">electric vehicles<\/a> (EVs), big freight truck makers like <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/daimler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Daimler<\/a> Truck and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Volvo<\/a> are investing heavily in hydrogen fuel cells to haul freight long distances because <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\" rel=\"noopener\">batteries<\/a> weigh too much to make <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/truck\/fuel_economy-electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">electric trucks<\/a> viable.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cells run hydrogen through a catalyst that produces energy and heat to power a small battery that drives the truck \u2014 the only <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">emission<\/a> from these cells is water.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cells have faced two challenges for broad adoption: they have so far been less efficient than diesel and fueling infrastructure in Europe is virtually non-existent.<\/p>\n<p>Nyland said the new cell system essentially addresses the first of those challenges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This brings the future forward,&#8221; Loop Energy Chief Executive Ben Nyland told Reuters. &#8220;This product delivers the economics that are needed for adoption today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nyland said that Loop Energy aims to provide the fuel cell system to startup truck makers and as part of hydrogen powertrains provided to big truck makers by major suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s biggest shareholder is U.S. engine maker <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/cummins\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Cummins<\/a>, which holds a more than 20% stake in Loop Energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><style><![CDATA[.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }]]><\/style>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n <lite-youtube videoid=\"H5dGC643KEw\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hydrogen fuel cell maker Loop Energy said on Sunday that its latest cell system can deliver better fuel economy than a diesel engine at current price levels.
