{"id":31780,"date":"2022-09-19T11:27:45","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T15:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31780"},"modified":"2022-09-19T11:27:45","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T15:27:45","slug":"mercedes-benz-plans-to-install-wind-turbines-with-over-100-mw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31780","title":{"rendered":"Mercedes-Benz plans to install wind turbines with over 100 MW output at German test track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/mercedes-benz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a> is taking another big step towards achieving its climate goals, as the automaker announced its plans to install a \u201cdouble-digit\u201d number of wind turbines at its Papenburg test track in Northern Germany. <\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/wind-power\/#:~:text=Wind%2C%20solar%20provide%2067%25%20of,in%20first%20half%20of%202022&amp;text=Clean%20energy%20accounted%20for%20more,Energy%20Regulatory%20Commission%20(FERC).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wind farm<\/a> expects to generate over 100 MW output by 2025, amounting to over 15% of Mercedes-Benz\u2019s annual electricity usage in Germany. <\/p>\n<p>The German luxury automaker has been actively pursuing its climate goals, including slashing its emissions in half by 2030 (its halfway mark) and achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2039. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, unlike some automakers, Mercedes is <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/07\/22\/mercedes-benz-go-all-electric-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">committing to an all-electric future<\/a> with EV models in all segments. All new vehicle architectures will be geared toward electric models from 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Mercedes-Benz said it was looking to cover 70% of its energy needs by 2030 from renewable sources, up from 50% previously. About 15% is expected from solar or wind sources connected to the automaker\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, starting this year, Mercedes says it will only purchase electricity for its facilities (over 100 locations total) from renewable energy sources. <\/p>\n<p>The automaker is already progressing towards its goals. J\u00f6rg Burzer, member of the board for Mercedes-Benz production and supply chain management, states: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>The targeted expansion of renewable energies at our own locations is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. With the realization of the planned wind farm project in Papenburg, we are taking an important step in this direction. We make an active contribution to the energy transition and the expansion of onshore wind power in Germany.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, Mercedes is reviewing a large-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/solar-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solar panel<\/a> installation project at the test site. Burzer continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>By installing photovoltaic systems on the roofs of our plants on a large scale, we are gradually reducing our external energy requirements.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>Mercedes-Benz is putting its money where its mouth is with its new planned wind turbine installation at its Papenburg test track. Compared to most automakers, Mercedes is making a real effort to support a sustainable future with aggressive electric vehicles and renewable energy targets.  <\/p>\n<p>Although 100 MW is not a huge amount, it\u2019s still encouraging to see one of the world\u2019s largest automakers going green. <\/p>\n<p>Test tracks are perfect for renewable energy projects such as solar and wind with large open spaces.
