{"id":31785,"date":"2022-09-20T00:03:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T04:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31785"},"modified":"2022-09-20T00:03:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T04:03:42","slug":"i-drove-a-tesla-model-y-and-discovered-6-reasons-not-to-buy-elon-musk-s-66-000-electric-suv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=31785","title":{"rendered":"I drove a Tesla Model Y and discovered 6 reasons not to buy Elon Musk&#8217;s $66,000 electric SUV | Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><figcaption>\n   The<br \/>\n  <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+y\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Tesla Model Y<\/a>.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul class=\"summary-list\">\n<li>Driving the Tesla Model Y showed me why people are so in love with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/elon+musk\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Elon Musk&#8217;s<\/a> cars.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Popular as it may be, the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+y\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Model Y<\/a> SUV isn&#8217;t the perfect electric SUV for everyone.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>If you need a comfy, plush ride and uncomplicated physical controls, it may be best to consider other models.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-model-y-review-interior-price-first-drive-2022-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">drove a Tesla for the first time<\/a>, and I&#8217;m starting to get why Elon Musk&#8217;s cars are by far the most popular <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">electric vehicles<\/a> in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to benefiting from a decade-plus head start on other carmakers, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Tesla&#8217;s<\/a> cars are sporty, packed with interesting tech, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-supercharger-charging-first-time-experience-compared-to-other-evs-2022-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">simple to charge through the company&#8217;s exclusive Supercharging network<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But my day with a friend&#8217;s Model Y SUV also taught me Teslas aren&#8217;t perfect or for everyone, despite what some of the brand&#8217;s most vocal fans may tell you. (Tesla doesn&#8217;t loan out cars to journalists, so I had to get a little resourceful.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bumpy ride<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/25743ef9e1395bdd2110facfaa635a68\" alt=\"The Tesla Model Y.\" data-uuid=\"a58df1e7-304f-3998-8e4f-52fe285532b1\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Tesla Model Y.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Model Y&#8217;s firm suspension gives it the liveliness and precision of a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">sports car<\/a> but not without sacrifice. Drive down any less-than-perfect road in the Model Y and you&#8217;ll notice every bump and crack. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bmw-ix-electric-suv-review-price-interior-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Some vehicles<\/a> are built to soak up road imperfections for passenger comfort, but the Model Y isn&#8217;t one of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ride quality may be better on models equipped with the standard 19-inch wheels, as opposed to the 20-inch rims I experienced.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>All-digital interface<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/eb71b0392454085fc0afc387cb8fcf32\" alt=\"The Tesla Model Y.\" data-uuid=\"0c2ec61f-d234-3971-8e89-41a3fe8c6601\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Tesla Model Y.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There&#8217;s another double-edged sword in the Model Y: Its iPad-like, 15-inch touchscreen. It&#8217;s quick and responsive, featuring impressive graphics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-boombox-fart-feature-violates-pedestrian-safety-regulations-recall-2022-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">fun features<\/a> like games, but replaces practically all the switches, buttons, and knobs that drivers are accustomed to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like other Teslas, the Model Y packs functions like door locks, windshield wipers, headlights, climate controls (including air-vent direction), and mirror adjustments into the screen. While this all may become second nature for most owners over time, the learning curve may be too steep for some.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(You can also access many functions through voice commands.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/944b0929699e799363c8a98623c26a3f\" alt=\"The Tesla Model Y.\" data-uuid=\"1202a5b7-9fde-3162-b33c-24a93b363c3f\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Tesla Model Y.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For all its cutting-edge features, the Model Y does without some of the most basic and widespread tech features on the market: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Anyone who&#8217;s used to relying on their smartphone while driving will have to use Tesla&#8217;s built-in navigation and music apps instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>No gauge cluster<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/1dc4e2dd5cfc4a5590ca6659616be43b\" alt=\"The Tesla Model Y.\" data-uuid=\"ed50b785-a096-345c-94d5-9fb37d4e5cd4\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Tesla Model Y.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the strangest things about hopping into a Tesla for the first time was belting in, looking forward, and seeing nothing. All the important driving info that would normally be shown in a gauge cluster behind the steering wheel is instead displayed in the Model Y&#8217;s all-powerful touchscreen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It means you have to glance sideways to check your speed, cruise-control settings, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> level, and turn-by-turn directions. While this may not be a deal breaker, it can be distracting to constantly peer at the display, and the Model Y could benefit from a driver-facing display like you&#8217;d find in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/kia-ev6-electric-car-suv-review-gt-line-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">most competing electric cars<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rear visibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/9ef61b65c9c036ccf3fb7eaabdd504f5\" alt=\"The Tesla Model Y.\" data-uuid=\"fe6597e5-c0ad-3262-bbe8-fa05bba8f695\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Tesla Model Y.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Model Y&#8217;s slanted roof pinches its back window, impeding visibility. But Tesla&#8217;s prices in particular have been out of control over the last year or so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-model-y-standard-range-order-sales-electric-vehicle-car-2021-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">briefly sold a Model Y Standard Range<\/a> for around $41,000 but eliminated that cheapest model in early 2021. Since then, the price of the new base version (the Model Y Long Range) has rocketed from around $50,000 to $66,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Y provides lots of range and capability for the money, but competing electric SUVs can be had for between $40,000 and $50,000.
