{"id":32240,"date":"2022-09-26T09:03:59","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=32240"},"modified":"2022-09-26T09:03:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:03:59","slug":"acura-vp-says-nsx-likely-return-all-electric-propulsion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=32240","title":{"rendered":"Acura VP Says NSX Likely To Return With All-Electric Propulsion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Acura NSX has always been the brand&#8217;s technological flagship, whether we&#8217;re talking about the first-generation model with an all-aluminum body, chassis and V6 engine featuring Honda&#8217;s VTEC system or the current NSX featuring a tri-motor gas-electric hybrid system.<\/p>\n<p>As the second-generation model has been discontinued this year with the launch of the Type S final edition limited to just 350 cars, the big question is whether Honda plans to bring back the storied nameplate for a third generation.<\/p>\n<p>While the automaker has not confirmed plans for a third-generation NSX, Acura Vice President and Brand Officer Jon Ikeda said he would bet on it in an interview with <em>Nikkei Asia, <\/em>adding that\u00a0if the NSX gets the green light from <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/honda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Honda<\/a>, &#8220;<em>it&#8217;s going to be electric.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>He believes that a third-generation NSX would be the perfect platform to highlight the brand&#8217;s shift from internal combustion to battery-electric propulsion.<\/p>\n<p>While Honda has formed a joint venture with General Motors to bring two electric vehicles to market in 2024\u2014the Honda Prologue and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motor1.com\/news\/605190\/acura-zdx-and-zdx-type-s-will-be-brands-first-evs-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acura ZDX<\/a>\u2014and more affordable ones later on, the Japanese company also plans to build EVs separately from GM and its Ultium platform.<\/p>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"image\" data-border=\"\" data-id=\"6578248\" readability=\"1\"><picture loading=\"lazy\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s1\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\" media=\"(min-width: 1025px)\"\/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s3\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.webp 1x, https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s2\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.webp 2x\" type=\"image\/webp\"\/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s1\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" media=\"(min-width: 1025px)\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s3\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.jpg\" alt=\"Honda electric sports cars teased\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s3\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.jpg 1x, https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/xqg7ww\/s1\/honda-electric-sports-cars-teased.jpg 2x\" width=\"16\" height=\"9\"\/> <\/picture>\n<div class=\"photo-title\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>Honda electric sports cars teased; the one on the right has NSX proportions<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Honda Motor global CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the company will spend $40 billion to go fully electric by 2040, with <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/579439\/honda-launch-30-evs-globally-by-2030-including-two-sports-cars\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22579439%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22honda-launch-30-evs-globally-by-2030-including-two-sports-cars%22%7D\">the automaker pledging to launch 30 BEVs by the end of this decade<\/a>. Many of them will be based on Honda&#8217;s own e:Architecture BEV platform, which Ikeda believes to be ideal for the NSX.<\/p>\n<p>An all-electric Acura NSX would fit its role as a halo nameplate and would also indicate what the new architecture is capable of, the executive said. However, he stressed that a new NSX would be about more than just straight line acceleration, as the goal would be to demonstrate extreme levels of handling and other technological advantages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>It won\u2019t be just about straight lines,<\/em>&#8221; Ikeda noted. He believes the final decision on bringing back the NSX will likely be up to Mibe, although the CEO&#8217;s commitment to EVs seems to indicate that a new battery-powered sports car will follow.<\/p>\n<p>So when are we to expect the all-electric Acura NSX to arrive? Well, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/600859\/2024-honda-prologue-ev-reveals-more-its-neo-rugged-design\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22600859%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222024-honda-prologue-ev-reveals-more-its-neo-rugged-design%22%7D\">GM-based Honda Prologue entering production in 2024<\/a>, it will be a couple more years before the Japanese automaker is ready to launch its first EV based on the e:Architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That would be the perfect time to debut a new NSX, other Honda insiders told <em>Nikkei Asia<\/em>.
