Here&#8217;s an example of <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1964_Trucks_and_Vans\/1964-Chevrolet-Pickups-Brochure-Rev\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">The General&#8217;s three-quarter-ton pickup for 1964<\/a>, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">a yard near Denver, Colo.,<\/a> after a 58-year career.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175846\/45-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The build tag shows that it&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1964_Trucks_and_Vans\/1964-Chevrolet-Pickups-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1964_Chevrolet_Pickups_Rev-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">127-inch wheelbase model with 8-foot bed<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1964_Trucks_and_Vans\/1964-Chevrolet-Pickups-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1964_Chevrolet_Pickups_Rev-04-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">&#8220;Cab with Custom Options&#8221;<\/a> such as &#8220;full-depth foam cushion&#8221; seat, passenger-side door lock, a driver&#8217;s armrest and a cigarette lighter. That option package maxed out the comfort in this truck&#8217;s cab.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175839\/36-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A person who had only been inside 21st-century <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/chevrolet\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Chevrolet pickups<\/a> would find this allegedly upgraded cab intolerably cramped, noisy and harsh, even in perfect original condition. Truck owners were made of tougher stuff in 1964.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175823\/05-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I was puzzled about these &#8220;U.9000&#8221; stickers, which were decorated with pinstripe stickers to make them look nicer. Turns out the State of Utah (next door to Colorado) once required commercial light trucks to display such labels to indicate weight capacity. U.6000 stickers went on half-ton trucks, while this type went on the three-quarter-tonners. This regulation was in effect from the 1960s through the 1980s. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/294177668749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">You can still buy these stickers<\/a> as new old stock today.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175838\/34-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Capitol <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Chevrolet<\/a> was located on the site of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsonjet.hetclub.org\/botterill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">the old Botterill Hudson Essex dealership<\/a> in downtown Denver, just a block from the state capitol. It appears to have closed down (or moved a few miles south on Broadway and undergone a name change) at some point around 1967.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175835\/29-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So it spent some (and probably most) of its life as a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/photos\/americas-hardest-working-trucks\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">work truck<\/a>. The odometer shows 8,813 miles, but I&#8217;d wager that the <em>true<\/em> mileage is more like 808,813 miles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175847\/47-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As switches and controls failed, they were replaced with whatever happened to be on hand in the shop that day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175829\/13-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The chances that a truck like this would still have the original engine are about nil. There&#8217;s a Goodwrench 350 small-block crate engine under the hood now, and it&#8217;s likely the fifth or sixth powerplant that has lived in this engine bay. Since it&#8217;s not a <em>Mr.<\/em> Goodwrench engine, it was built after GM dropped the honorific in 1997. In 2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2010\/11\/08\/goodbye-mr-goodwrench-gm-reportedly-killing-service-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">the Goodwrench name got axed<\/a> and became GM Certified Service.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175828\/11-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The build tag doesn&#8217;t specify <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1964_Trucks_and_Vans\/1964-Chevrolet-Pickups-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1964_Chevrolet_Pickups_Rev-08-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">the original engine that lived here<\/a> when LBJ was in the White House, but it could have been one of two high-torque straight-sixes (the base engine was a 230-cubic-inch version with 220 pound-feet, and the optional six was a 292 with 275 pound-feet) or a 283-cubic-inch small-block V8.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175834\/28-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The transmission is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">four-on-the-floor manual<\/a>, which was <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1964_Trucks_and_Vans\/1964-Chevrolet-Pickups-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1964_Chevrolet_Pickups_Rev-10-11.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">standard equipment on the one-ton C30<\/a>, but an extra-cost item in the C20 (which had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">three-on-the-tree column-shift manual<\/a> as base equipment). A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a35542917\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-with-a-two-speed-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">two-speed Powerglide automatic<\/a> was available as well. There&#8217;s a lot of Mountain West history in this truck.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175827\/10-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It was a hard-working truck and certainly earned its keep over the decades. The MSRP for a 1964 C20 with eight-foot Fleetside bed was $2,208, which amounts to about $21,170 in 2022 dollars. That&#8217;s a steal, and GM sold better than a half-million C-Series trucks for the 1964 model year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175825\/06-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Riveted-on stainless steel patches last a lot longer than body filler for rust <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">repairs<\/a>, though eventually the rot spread beyond this patch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175849\/50-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>At some point, it got a camper shell of reasonably modern vintage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/03175843\/40-1964-Chevrolet-C20-Pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The cab has some 3&#8243; speakers in handmade plywood cases.
