{"id":33009,"date":"2022-10-05T12:04:06","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T16:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33009"},"modified":"2022-10-05T12:04:06","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T16:04:06","slug":"1137379_tesla-bets-on-camera-sensing-drops-ultrasonic-sensors-pauses-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33009","title":{"rendered":"Tesla bets on camera sensing, drops ultrasonic sensors, pauses some features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla confirmed that as of October 2022, all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134049_base-tesla-model-3-more-range-slower-acceleration-7-000-price-hike-vs-earlier-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Model 3<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134162_tesla-model-y-base-price-breaks-60-000-tops-original-price-of-model-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Model Y<\/a> vehicles built for North America, as well as Europe, the Middle East, and Taiwan, no longer include ultrasonic sensors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a range of driver assistance features, including Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, and what Tesla considers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1136786_ralph-nader-nhtsa-order-removal-of-tesla-full-self-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Self Driving<\/a>\u2014plus other active-safety features\u2014the electric vehicles will rely solely on the camera-based system that the company terms Tesla Vision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla says that cars shipped without ultrasonic sensors, which it sometimes abbreviates USS, will \u201ctemporarily\u201d lose access to a wide range of features, including Park Assist, Autopark, Summon, and Smart Summon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These features will all be back, Tesla promises, but the company makes no assurance that their replacements will be better. Ultrasonic sensors are used primarily for parking, as well as short-range detection. They\u2019re also tied into the automatic emergency braking system in some vehicles, although this doesn\u2019t appear to be the case even in newer Teslas with them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla says that it has no plans to disable the ultrasonic sensors in the current fleet of vehicles\u2014something it could technically do over the air.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla last year announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132417_tesla-model-3-and-model-y-camera-only-sensing-is-costing-safety-ratings-causing-confusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it would drop radar sensors<\/a> from all its vehicles, a move that at least temporarily caused the automaker to lose some safety accolades. CEO Elon Musk has claimed that signal\/noise from the sensors actually detracts from the performance of its camera systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cGiven the incremental improvements already achieved with Tesla Vision, and our roadmap of future Autopilot improvements and abilities, we are confident that this is the best strategy for the future of Autopilot and the safety of our customers,\u201d the company summed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/transitioning-tesla-vision\">support page<\/a> on the change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The company says that it
