However, we&#8217;re going to make it abundantly clear that intentionally using your Cybertruck (or any Tesla vehicle) as a boat is a terrible and dangerous idea. Honestly, intentionally using any car as a boat is likely to have dire consequences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/category\/elon-musk\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"8\" data-params=\"%7B%22section_route%22%3A%22news%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22elon-musk%22%7D\">Elon Musk<\/a> has noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a>&#8216;s vehicles can float, at least for some time, and won&#8217;t necessarily take on water like a gas car. There&#8217;s no intake, nor is there any engine to &#8220;hydrolock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This means the EV could hypothetically operate for an extended period of time without losing power. However, it doesn&#8217;t mean you should test it out unless you want your expensive electric car to end up at the bottom of a channel and risk your life. In the past, Musk published a few tweets like the following:<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22en%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3EWe%20*def*%20don%26%2339%3Bt%20recommended%20this%2C%20but%20Model%20S%20floats%20well%20enough%20to%20turn%20it%20into%20a%20boat%20for%20short%20periods%20of%20time.%20Thrust%20via%20wheel%20rotation.%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Elon%20Musk%20(%40elonmusk)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Felonmusk%2Fstatus%2F744551674082136066%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3EJune%2019%2C%202016%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>With all of that said, Musk actually tweeted that the &#8220;Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat.&#8221; He added that it will even be able to cross &#8220;rivers, lakes, and seas that aren&#8217;t too choppy.&#8221; The parts about &#8220;briefly&#8221; and &#8220;not too choppy&#8221; are scary. However, the tweet was published a few weeks ago, and despite many warnings about the dangers involved, the tweet still exists:<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22en%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3ENeeds%20be%20able%20to%20get%20from%20Starbase%20to%20South%20Padre%20Island%2C%20which%20requires%20crossing%20the%20channel%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Elon%20Musk%20(%40elonmusk)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Felonmusk%2Fstatus%2F1575509494510993408%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3ESeptember%2029%2C%202022%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>The trip from SpaceX&#8217;s Starbase to South Padre Island is less than 500 meters, according to <em>Teslarati<\/em>. The crossing could take about 15 to 25 minutes while traveling at just 3 to 10 knots. Based on the footage we&#8217;ve seen of other Tesla vehicles successfully navigating flood waters, Musk could probably get the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tag\/electric-pickup-truck\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"7\" data-params=\"%7B%22tag%22%3A%22electric%20truck%22%2C%22originalTitle%22%3A%22electric%20pickup%20truck%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22electric-pickup-truck%22%7D\">electric truck<\/a> to pull it off. However, the CEO doesn&#8217;t say anything about actually offering these as options. Perhaps Tesla could put something together for a one-off vehicle to prove the possibilities, but it would be likely to cause negative reactions from safety officials and the media.<\/p>\n<p>Musk&#8217;s tweets on the subject have already led to warnings.
