{"id":33781,"date":"2022-10-15T12:03:47","date_gmt":"2022-10-15T16:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33781"},"modified":"2022-10-15T12:03:47","modified_gmt":"2022-10-15T16:03:47","slug":"junkyard-gem-1986-lincoln-town-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33781","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1986 Lincoln Town Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ford&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lincoln\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Lincoln<\/a> Division applied the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lincoln\/town+car\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Town Car<\/a> name (originally the Anglicized name for a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coup%C3%A9_de_ville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\"><em>coup\u00e9 de ville<\/em> horse-drawn carriage<\/a>) to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">new cars<\/a> beginning with <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Lincoln\/1959_Lincoln\/1959-Lincoln-Full-Line-Prestige-Brochure\/slides\/1959_Lincoln_Full_Line_Prestige-12-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the 1959 Continental<\/a>, but it wasn&#8217;t until the 1981 model year that the Town Car became a Lincoln model in its own right (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/11\/01\/junkyard-gem-1978-lincoln-continental-town-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">earlier Town Cars were Continentals<\/a>). Those boxy, sharp-edged Town Cars were built throughout the remainder of the 1980s and sold well, but they&#8217;re almost extinct today. Here&#8217;s one of those cars, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">a Denver-area self-service yard<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/06110457\/48-1986-Lincoln-Town-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Town Car was built from the 1981 through 2011 model years, with <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Lincoln\/1990-Lincoln\/1990-Lincoln-Town-Car-Prestige-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">a complete redesign for 1990<\/a> that kept the same chassis but added a less angular body and rear air suspension. In 1998, the Town Car got the full &#8220;whale&#8221; body treatment seen on its <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1998-Ford\/1998%20Ford%20Crown%20Victoria\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Ford Crown Victoria<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Mercury\/1998-Mercury\/1998-Mercury-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1998_Mercury_Full_Line-06-07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Mercury Grand Marquis<\/a> siblings, and production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/11\/28\/junkyard-gem-2000-lincoln-town-car-cartier-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">that version<\/a> continued until the end. In <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">China<\/a>, Hongqi built a version badged as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolcarsinchina.com\/2018\/09\/30\/the-hongqi-qijian-ca7460-is-another-kind-of-lincoln-town-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the CA7460 Qijian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/06110504\/54-1986-Lincoln-Town-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All 1981-2011 Town Cars lived on the versatile and sturdy body-on-frame <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_Panther_platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Panther platform<\/a>.
