{"id":33867,"date":"2022-10-17T12:04:01","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T16:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33867"},"modified":"2022-10-17T12:04:01","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T16:04:01","slug":"gmc-hummer-ev-safety-essay-atlantic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=33867","title":{"rendered":"The GMC Hummer EV is big and fast; it&#8217;s also a social conundrum &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pedestrian fatalities, unresolved safety issues, overachieving and overweight <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">trucks<\/a> \u2014 overweight <em>electric <\/em>trucks \u2014 and divisive attitudes about vehicles equipped as is the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmc.com\/electric\/hummer-ev\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Hummer EV<\/a>, are very much on the mind of <a href=\"https:\/\/epic.uchicago.edu\/people\/robinson-meyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Robinson Meyer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Meyer, who suggests that the 1,000-horsepower pickup is a cross &#8220;between an ambulance and a race car,&#8221; is a staff writer for <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, a well-respected, long-lived journal founded in 1857. His<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2022\/10\/hummer-ev-hybrid-electric-super-trucks-safety\/671708\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\"> recent essay<\/a> in the monthly&#8217;s flagship magazine starts off describing a scary video clip posted online by<a href=\"https:\/\/biographyer.com\/edmond-barseghian-biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\"> Edward Barseghian<\/a> that features the 9,000-pound <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hummer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Hummer<\/a> hurtling full tilt towards three lanes of cars idling at a light (the driver stops it in time). Then he goes on to pretty much berate the machine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Hummer EV haters and lovers had discovered one of the most important facts about electric &#8216;<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/photos\/super-trucks\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">super trucks<\/a>&#8216;: They are very heavy, and they go very fast,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;If you imagine an ambulance that can accelerate as fast as a Formula 1 car, you\u2019re imagining a vehicle only slightly more unwieldy than the new Hummer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meyer goes on to discuss the issue of allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/vehicles\/electric_batteries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">battery powered<\/a> vehicles that weigh as much as the Hummer does onto public roads. &#8220;The weight of EVs is a safety issue that drivers \u2014 and cyclists and pedestrians \u2014 will only have to keep worrying about as these cars go mainstream,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Suffice it to say that cars as huge as the Hummer EV need to face some kind of regulation, especially in cities and towns, where they pose a distinct threat to the public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To Hummer devotees, them&#8217;s fightin&#8217; words. But Meyer takes pains to present a sort of response from Anthony Schiavo, a research director at Lux Research, a global advisory firm: Why is the Hummer so heavy if its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\" rel=\"noopener\">batteries<\/a> weigh only about 3,000 pounds?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely a design choice and a marketing choice,\u201d Schiavo answers. \u201cPeople like larger vehicles, and the reason why those larger vehicles are getting made is because they sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author concludes by bringing into his thesis the issues of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">climate change<\/a>, liberal and conservative politics. In some places, his arguments wander; they become muddled.
