{"id":34282,"date":"2022-10-21T12:04:05","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34282"},"modified":"2022-10-21T12:04:05","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:04:05","slug":"1137558_tesla-working-on-a-smaller-cheaper-ev-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34282","title":{"rendered":"Tesla working on a smaller, cheaper EV platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tesla plans to go smaller and more affordable for its next generation of electric vehicles, CEO Elon Musk has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a conference call on Tuesday following the release of Tesla&#8217;s third-quarter financial results, Musk said the company was working on a next-generation platform designed for vehicles smaller than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/model-3\">current Model 3<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1135391_tesla-s-german-plant-goes-online-with-start-of-model-y-production\">Model Y crossover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the platform would cost half what the platform of the Model 3 and Model Y costs, which points to any vehicle based on it also being more affordable than the Model 3 and Model Y.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, we are done with the engineering for Cybertrucks and for Semi,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s obviously what we\u2019re working on, the next-generation vehicle, which will be probably be about half the cost of the 3 and Y platform. It will be smaller, to be clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100827320_m\" title=\"2022 Tesla Model 3\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Tesla Model 3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2022-tesla-model-3_100827320_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Tesla Model 3<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Musk also predicted that production of vehicles on the new platform will exceed the combined production of the rest of Tesla&#8217;s lineup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it will, I think, certainly exceed the production of all our other vehicles combined,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, obviously, we&#8217;re going to take everything we learned from S, X, 3, Y, Cybertruck and Semi into that platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk didn&#8217;t go into detail about how Tesla will cut costs but said the company had a goal to get the \u201ceffort\u201d required to build EVs on the next-gen platform to half what is required for the Model 3 and Model Y.<\/p>\n<p>The Model 3 is the most affordable Tesla at present, starting at $48,490. As for the cost for a future EV, Musk in 2020 said Tesla could cut costs via further improvements in the production process coupled with cheaper battery chemistry, which could result in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1129704_tesla-promises-25-000-ev-batteries-as-part-of-vehicle-structure\">EV costing as little as $25,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before its launch in 2018, Musk said the Model 3 would start at $35,000.
