{"id":34328,"date":"2022-10-22T09:03:51","date_gmt":"2022-10-22T13:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34328"},"modified":"2022-10-22T09:03:51","modified_gmt":"2022-10-22T13:03:51","slug":"junkyard-gem-1978-fiat-124-sport-spider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34328","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1978 Fiat 124 Sport Spider"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2020-FIAT-124+Spider\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">the Fiat 124 Spider was a Mazda<\/a>, it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autominded.net\/brochure\/fiat\/1975%20%20FiatFullLine%200405.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">the 124\u00a0<em>Sport<\/em> Spider<\/a>, the two-seat convertible version of the huge-selling (in Europe) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1817406\/1973-fiat-124-car-choice-european-stuntmen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">124 sedan<\/a>. Sold in the United States from the 1968 through 1985 model years (with the final few years sporting Pininfarina badges, courtesy of Malcolm Bricklin), these fan and affordable cars were once <em>everywhere<\/em> on our roads and owners have tried to hang onto them even after they break down. As a result, I see about as many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Fiat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">124 Sport Spiders in junkyards<\/a> these days as I did 40 years ago, when you could still buy them new. Here&#8217;s a little red devil of a &#8217;78 Sport Spider, found in a San Francisco Bay Area car graveyard a few years back.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/14222649\/08-19878-Fiat-124-Sport-Spider-in-California-wrecking-yard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car&#8217;s main sales rival in the United States was the similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/05\/31\/junkyard-gem-1977-mg-mgb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">fun and affordable MGB<\/a>, and I still find plenty of those in the boneyards to this day. The MGB was sturdier but a bit more primitive than the Sport Spider, and both suffered from maddeningly unpredictable electrical systems.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/14222651\/09-19878-Fiat-124-Sport-Spider-in-California-wrecking-yard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The price tag on this car was $6,495, or about $30,780 in 2022 dollars. The 1978 MGB cost $5,649 ($26,770 now) that year. If you wanted the much quicker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/22\/junkyard-gem-1979-alfa-romeo-spider-veloce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Alfa Romeo Spider in 1978<\/a>, you had to shell out $9,195 ($43,570 today).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/14222657\/21-19878-Fiat-124-Sport-Spider-in-California-wrecking-yard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While the MGB&#8217;s antiquated pushrod straight-four made just 62.5 horsepower in 1978 (yes, British Leyland claimed that half-horse), the &#8217;78 Sport Spider put out <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/86\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">86<\/a> horsepower from its DOHC engine. The curb weight of the Spider was lower, too (2,180 pounds versus the Brit&#8217;s 2,338 pounds).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/14222647\/06-19878-Fiat-124-Sport-Spider-in-California-wrecking-yard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one has a much-faded 1990 San Francisco <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmta.com\/maps\/residential-parking-permit-rpp-area-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">residential parking permit<\/a>, for Zone C. That&#8217;s the upscale <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nob_Hill,_San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Nob Hill neighborhood<\/a>, where this car must have seemed a little too much on the proletariat side.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/14222658\/25-19878-Fiat-124-Sport-Spider-in-California-wrecking-yard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>These cars tend to spend decades sitting in a driveway or yard, awaiting <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">repairs<\/a> that may never come.
