{"id":34361,"date":"2022-10-22T19:28:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-22T23:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34361"},"modified":"2022-10-22T19:28:20","modified_gmt":"2022-10-22T23:28:20","slug":"china-offshore-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34361","title":{"rendered":"A city in China is planning an offshore wind farm so big that it could power all of Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Chaozhou, in China\u2019s Guangdong province, is going to build an offshore wind farm so large that it is expected to provide more power than all of Norway\u2019s power plants combined.<\/p>\n<p>The city intends to start work on the 43.3 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind farm before 2025, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bjx.com.cn\/html\/20221021\/1262707-3.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the city\u2019s five-year plan<\/a>, which is published online. The plan does not disclose how much the offshore wind farm is expected to cost.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Chaozhou will build the wind farm between 47 and 115 miles (75 and 185 km) off the city\u2019s coast, on the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe area has unique topographical features that mean wind will be strong enough to run the turbines 3,800 to 4,300 hours a year, or 43% to 49% of the time, an unusually high utilization rate,\u201d <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-21\/chinese-city-plans-offshore-wind-farm-that-could-power-norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On October 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/10\/17\/offshore-wind-turbine-worlds-largest-rotor-diameter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Electrek<\/em> reported<\/a> that a 13.6 megawatt offshore wind turbine with a record-breaking rotor diameter of 252 meters (827 feet) debuted in China ahead of the country\u2019s 20th Party Congress in Beijing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\" readability=\"10.543352601156\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"14.936416184971\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wow\u00a0\u2013 China just built more offshore wind capacity, in 2021 alone,\u00a0than the rest of the world had managed in the last 5yrs put together<\/p>\n<p>Its 26GW now accounts for half of the world&#8217;s 54GW total<\/p>\n<p>Also, it added twice as much in 2021 as IEA had forecast in\u2026December 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yFpctkI1Zd\">pic.twitter.com\/yFpctkI1Zd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Simon Evans (@DrSimEvans) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrSimEvans\/status\/1485977349669769219?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>China connected more offshore wind generation capacity in 2021 \u2013 17 GW \u2013 than every other country in the world installed in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>So China is going big, but it\u2019s also going slow. It still has a net zero by 2060 target.
