{"id":34801,"date":"2022-10-29T00:03:53","date_gmt":"2022-10-29T04:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34801"},"modified":"2022-10-29T00:03:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-29T04:03:53","slug":"eu-ban-new-internal-combustion-cars-2035","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34801","title":{"rendered":"EU takes another step toward banning new combustion-engine cars from 2035 &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS \u2014 The European Parliament and EU member countries have reached a deal to ban the sale of new gasoline and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/diesel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">diesel cars<\/a> and vans by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>EU negotiators sealed on Thursday night the first agreement of the bloc&#8217;s \u201cFit for 55&#8243; package set up by the Commission to achieve the EU\u2019s climate goals of cutting <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">emissions<\/a> of the gases that cause <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">global warming<\/a> by 55% over this decade.<\/p>\n<p>The EU Parliament said the deal is a \u201cclear signal ahead of the UN COP27 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Climate Change<\/a> Conference that the EU is serious about adopting concrete laws to reach the more ambitious targets set out in the EU Climate Law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the bloc&#8217;s data, transport is the only sector where greenhouse gas emissions have increased in the past three decades, rising 33.5% between 1990 and 2019. Passenger cars are a major polluter, accounting for 61% of total CO2 emissions from EU road transport.<\/p>\n<p>The EU wants to drastically reduce gas emission from transportation by 2050 and promote <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">electric cars<\/a>, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-europe-e89de347252c60606f07c57d491f82e6\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">report<\/a> from the bloc\u2019s external auditor showed last year that the region is lacking the appropriate charging stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic decision as it sets for the first time a clear decarbonization pathway \u2014 with targets in 2025, 2030 and 2035 and aligned with our goal of climate neutrality by 2050,&#8221; boasted Pascal Canfin, the chair of the environment committee of the European Parliament. \u201cThis sector, which accounts for 16% of European emissions at the moment, will be carbon neutral by 2050.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>World leaders agreed in Paris in 2015 to work to keep global temperatures from increasing more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and ideally no more than 1.5 degrees C (2.7 F) by the end of the century. Scientists even the less ambitious goal will be missed by a wide margin unless drastic steps are taken to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace said the 2035 deadline is too late to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU is taking the scenic route, and that route ends in disaster,&#8221; said Greenpeace EU transport campaigner Lorelei Limousin. \u201cA European 2035 phase-out of fossil fuel-burning cars is not quick enough: <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">New cars<\/a> with internal combustion engines should be banned by 2028 at the latest.
