With its smooth curves and flush side glass, it boasted astonishingly low aerodynamic drag, achieving <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+economy\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">fuel economy<\/a> at high speeds that other big cars couldn&#8217;t come close to matching (until <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Ford<\/a> came out with the Audi-influenced design of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/10\/03\/junkyard-gem-1986-ford-taurus-lx-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the new Taurus for 1986<\/a>). The 5000 S Quattro was an unusual model with all-wheel-drive but without the turbocharging of the 5000 CS, nearly extinct today, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve got for today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12165805\/21-1987-Audi-5000-S-Quattro-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Audi 100 had its European-market name here from its American introduction for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/01\/17\/junkyard-gem-1970-audi-100-ls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the 1970 model year<\/a> through 1977, after which its name became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2016\/10\/junkyard-find-1979-audi-5000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the more impressive-sounding 5000<\/a> here. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2016\/01\/junkyard-find-1990-audi-100-quattro-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">The 100 name returned<\/a> for 1989, because certain events made the 5000 name poisonous.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12165751\/06-1987-Audi-5000-S-Quattro-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t talk about the 5000 without addressing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sudden_unintended_acceleration#Audi_5000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">&#8220;unintended acceleration&#8221; controversy<\/a> that kneecapped Audi sales in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YLDIPECcMJI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">a November 1986 &#8220;<em>60 Minutes&#8221;<\/em> piece<\/a> alleging that 5000s with automatic transmissions sometimes lurched forward when the driver pressed the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/brakes\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">brake<\/a> pedal. Much highly publicized arglebargle followed, with the upshot being that everyone involved looked bad and U.S.-market Audi sales \u2014 not just the 5000, <em>all<\/em> Audis \u2014 fell off a cliff and didn&#8217;t recover until well into the 1990s. This 5000 has a five-speed manual transmission, so it wouldn&#8217;t have been subject to the alleged problem; in fact, the original buyer may have scored a screaming deal on this car, which was built in June 1987 and thus hit a depopulated showroom floor at the height of the Unintended Acceleration hooraw.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12165757\/13-1987-Audi-5000-S-Quattro-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Most American buyers who were willing to pay extra for Audi&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/media.audiusa.com\/en-us\/releases\/403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Quattro all-wheel-drive system<\/a> <em>also<\/em> peeled off the extra bills to get the turbocharged engine, so naturally aspirated 5000 S Quattros were rare beasts. This straight-five displaced 2.3 liters and made 130 horsepower, while the turbo version whooshed out 162 horses. If you think this engine compartment looks like the one in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/01\/05\/volkswagen-synchro-syncro-wagon-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">the Volkswagen Quantum Syncro from the same era<\/a>, you&#8217;re right!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12165756\/11-1987-Audi-5000-S-Quattro-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Quattro system first appeared in the United States on 1983 Audis, following in the footsteps of the revolutionary all-wheel-drive rig introduced in 1979 by American Motors on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/01\/13\/junkyard-gem-1983-amc-eagle-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the Eagle<\/a>. By the late 1980s, many other car companies offered true all-wheel-drive systems, but AMC and Audi competed only against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/03\/13\/junkyard-gem-1986-toyota-tercel-sr5-4wd-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\"><em>four<\/em>-wheel-drive cars<\/a> for much of the decade. Ford was offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1883171\/junkyard-treasure-1987-ford-tempo-all-wheel-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">AWD versions of the Tempo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1987-mercury-topaz-gs-4wd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Mercury Topaz in 1987<\/a>, priced at just $9,984 and $10,119 ($26,590 and $26,950 today), but it&#8217;s doubtful than any potential Audi 5000 buyer would have considered those cramped, underpowered machines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12165802\/16-1987-Audi-5000-S-Quattro-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/joe+biden\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Joe Biden<\/a> took time out from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonion.com\/shirtless-biden-washes-trans-am-in-white-house-driveway-1819570732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">washing his Trans Am<\/a> to have an Audi 5000 dispatched to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/12\/auction-to-crusher-12-weeks-in-the-lives-of-two-cars-at-a-self-service-wrecking-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">The Crusher&#8217;s waiting room<\/a>.
