Still, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">General Motors<\/a> made a determined effort to pry away <em>some<\/em> sales to law-enforcement fleet buyers during that period, mostly in the form of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/9C1_(Chevrolet_Police_package)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">9C1\/9C3 Chevrolet Impala\/Caprice<\/a>. I&#8217;ve documented just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/03\/30\/chevrolet-caprice-classic-9c1-police-car-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">a single rear-wheel-drive 9C1 Caprice<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">this series<\/a> so far, so the time seemed right to seek out a later front-wheel-drive <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Chevy<\/a> police cruiser. Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevrolet_Impala#Impala_9C1_&amp;_9C3_(ninth_generation)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">W-Platform 9C1<\/a> <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/impala\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Impala<\/a>, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/locations.lkqpickyourpart.com\/co\/denver\/6100-n.-federal-blvd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">a Denver self-service yard<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12104132\/30-2010-Chevrolet-Impala-Police-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Impala was a rear-wheel-drive car from the time of its introduction for <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1958-Chevrolet\/1958-Chevrolet-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1958_Chevrolet-04-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the 1958 model year<\/a> through <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1996-Chevrolet\/1996-Chevrolet-Impala-SS-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the final &#8220;whale&#8221; cars in 1996<\/a>, with some interruptions in between when <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1988-Chevrolet\/1988-Chevrolet-Caprice-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">only the Caprice name was used on big Chevy sedans sold here<\/a>. When the Impala name was revived\u2014 again\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2000-Chevrolet-Impala\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">for the 2000 model year<\/a>, it was applied to a front-wheel-drive car based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Motors_W_platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the same platform<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/08\/29\/junkyard-gem-2000-pontiac-grand-prix-daytona-500-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">the Pontiac Grand Prix<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/10\/03\/junkyard-gem-2005-chevrolet-monte-carlo-ss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Chevrolet Monte Carlo<\/a>. That&#8217;s where it stayed until The General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/12\/30\/cars-discontinued-for-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">axed the Impala<\/a> yet another time, in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12104125\/16-2010-Chevrolet-Impala-Police-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy enough to get ex-cop vehicles at <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/auction-action\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">auction<\/a>, as I learned when I bought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/05\/my-introduction-to-panther-love-inaugural-police-interceptor-road-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">the seven-year-old P71 Police Interceptor<\/a> that became my daily driver for the latter half of the 2000s. That car was an unmarked unit used by a parole officer, while today&#8217;s Junkyard Gem obviously started life as a regular patrol car.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12123149\/98-Japanese-Police-Vehicles-1-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I think my next ex-police vehicle will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a2132911\/quick-tour-police-vehicles-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">come from Japan<\/a>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a39960919\/when-kei-van-dreams-become-kei-van-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">the owner of a Subaru kei van<\/a>, I&#8217;ve had my eye on Japanese auctions for a solid <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/subaru\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Subaru<\/a> Chiffon Police Interceptor (this despite the fact that the Chiffon is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daihatsu.co.jp\/tanto\/special\/teaser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">really a Daihatsu<\/a>\u00a0<em>and<\/em> won&#8217;t be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/photos\/13-cars-you-can-import-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">legal for import<\/a> to the United States for another 19 years).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12104129\/21-2010-Chevrolet-Impala-Police-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Power came from this 3.9-liter <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GM_High_Value_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">High Value V6 engine<\/a>, rated at <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/230\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">230<\/a> horsepower with the 9C1&#8217;s dual-exhaust system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12104135\/35-2010-Chevrolet-Impala-Police-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The only transmission available was a heavy-duty version of the 4T65E four-speed automatic. There appears to be a spare in this car&#8217;s trunk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/09\/12104119\/09-2010-Chevrolet-Impala-Police-Car-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 9C1 got all manner of special equipment, including oversized fluid coolers and heavy-duty suspension and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/brakes\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">brakes<\/a>.
