{"id":34948,"date":"2022-10-31T10:43:37","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T14:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34948"},"modified":"2022-10-31T10:43:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T14:43:37","slug":"andrej-karpathy-coming-back-tesla-work-optimus-agi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=34948","title":{"rendered":"Andrej Karpathy considers coming back to Tesla to work on Optimus and AGI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrej Karpathy, Tesla\u2019s former head of artificial intelligence, said that he could return to Tesla, especially to work on the Optimus robot and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).<\/p>\n<p>Karpathy joined Tesla more than five years ago as a neural net and computer vision expert. He joined as Tesla was transitioning from using Mobileye\u2019s technology for driver-assist features to its own system powered by computer vision.<\/p>\n<p>The engineer is credited for building Tesla\u2019s machine learning and computer vision team. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a big part of Tesla\u2019s Autopilot team and the automaker\u2019s effort to develop a full self-driving system.<\/p>\n<p>As Tesla expanded its effort from self-driving to broader artificial intelligence, Karpathy was promoted to senior director of AI at Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Karpathy announced that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/03\/28\/tesla-head-ai-andrej-karpathy-sabbatical-people-worried\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he was going on sabbatical for four months<\/a>. At the time, we reported that it was worrisome since Tesla executives taking breaks has most often resulted in them not coming back.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/07\/13\/tesla-loses-head-ai-vision-andrej-karpathy-big-loss-autopilot-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karpathy announced in July that he was not coming back to Tesla<\/a> to focus on his \u201clong-term passions around technical work in AI, open source and education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Lex Fridman podcast this weekend, the engineer elaborated on why he left Tesla. I would actually be interested in revisiting [Tesla] \u2013 maybe coming back at some point, maybe to work on Optimus or AGI at Tesla. I think Tesla is going to do incredible things. It\u2019s a massive large-scale robotics company with in-house talent doing incredible things.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded on Twitter by saying that the engineer would \u201calways be welcome at Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>Karpathy was a big loss for Tesla, but he left only after helping to build a large, talented team, so his impact is likely going to be felt for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I understand his reason for leaving, but I feel like there might be more to it because if that was the only reason, he could have moved to a more hardcore engineering role and walked back his managerial duties.
