{"id":35152,"date":"2022-11-02T17:48:48","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T21:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=35152"},"modified":"2022-11-02T17:48:48","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T21:48:48","slug":"gm-microvast-separator-tech-battery-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=35152","title":{"rendered":"GM and Microvast pair up to develop tech to boost battery safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Separators are safety-critical EV battery components, so GM and battery maker Microvast are pairing up to develop the technology of separators, as well as build a new separator plant in the United States. <\/p>\n<p>Separators separate the anode from the cathode, allowing for ion transfer.\u00a0It\u2019s one of the most important elements inside the battery cell. <\/p>\n<p>The US Department of Energy\u2019s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing initiative will support the two companies\u2019 development work with a $200 million grant.<\/p>\n<p>The companies will work together to develop new separator technology that can help improve EV safety, charging, and battery life.\u00a0The advanced technology will be designed to enhance the thermal stability of EV batteries and work with nearly all types of lithium-ion cells.<\/p>\n<p>GM will share its separator and coating technology with the Stafford, Texas-based <a href=\"https:\/\/microvast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microvast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Helfrich, GM chief technology officer and vice president of research and development, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"11\">\n<p>This collaboration with Microvast supports our ongoing efforts to develop a North American-focused EV supply chain and help put everyone in an EV. <\/p>\n<p>It will also provide us with pioneering separator technology that can be used in future Ultium batteries, and most importantly, supports our continuing commitment to safety.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Neither company indicated where in the United States the new separator plant would be built or what the timeline is.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <em>Electrek<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/10\/28\/gm-electric-vehicles-will-qualify-for-ev-tax-credit-in-2-to-3-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that GM CEO Mary Barra said that the company\u2019s EV models will qualify for the full Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) tax credit in two to three years:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"12\">\n<p>We think, out of the gate, we\u2019re going to be eligible for the $3,750, and we\u2019ll ramp to have full qualification in the next two to three years, getting up to the $7,500.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In order for its electric cars to qualify for the full IRA EV tax credit, GM will need to meet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IN\/IN11996#:~:text=Battery%20Components%20(%243%2C750)%3A,or%20assembled%20in%20North%20America.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two requirements<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Critical minerals ($3,750) \u2013 Starting next year, at least 40% of the value of critical minerals used in the EV\u2019s battery will need to be manufactured or assembled in the United States, with its free trade partners, or recycled in North America. Each year after that, the requirement goes up by 10%. For example, in 2024, 50% will be required, 60% will be needed in 2025, 70% in 2026, and so on.<\/li>\n<li>Battery components ($3,750) \u2013 Also, beginning next year, at least half of the value of the EVs battery components will need to be manufactured or assembled in North America.
