That&#8217;s 51% more than a year ago and up to 17% of the total car market.<\/p>\n<p>The market share of all-electric cars improved to 13%, which means that plug-in hybrids are responsible for about 4%. PHEVs noted a slightly higher growth rate than BEVs, but that&#8217;s only because of China, where they are growing very quickly (outside of China, PHEVs are down for the seventh consecutive month).<\/p>\n<p>Plug-in car registrations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BEVs: about *795,000 (up 50% year-over-year) and 13% share<\/li>\n<li>PHEVs: about *245,000 (up 54% year-over-year) and 4% share<\/li>\n<li>Total: 1,040,289 (up 51% year-over-year) and 17% share<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>* estimated from the market share<\/p>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/global-plug-in-electric-car-sales-september-2022-b.png\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/global-plug-in-electric-car-sales-september-2022-b.png\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"898\" height=\"486\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>So far this year, more than 6.8 million new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered globally, which opens the way to exceed 10 million units in 2022 (for the very first time).<\/p>\n<p>Plug-in car registrations year-to-date:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BEVs: about *4.9 million and 9.3% share<\/li>\n<li>PHEVs: about *1.9 million and 3.7% share<\/li>\n<li>Total: 6,815,282 and roughly 13% share<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>* estimated from the market share<\/p>\n<p>For reference, in <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/564639\/global-plugin-car-sales-december2021\/\">the twelve months of 2021, some 6.5 million plug-in electric cars were sold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In September, the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/model-y\/\">Tesla Model Y<\/a>\u00a0set a very bold sales record with over 113,000 units registered globally. That&#8217;s the first-ever six-digit result for an electric car and, at the same time, the Model Y became the top-selling model overall globally (ahead of the Toyota RAV4 with 90% certainty, according to Jose Pontes).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/model-3\/\">Tesla Model 3<\/a> was second, with a big advantage over the BYD Song (BEVs and PHEVs counted together).
