{"id":35420,"date":"2022-11-06T14:34:57","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T19:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=35420"},"modified":"2022-11-06T14:34:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T19:34:57","slug":"clear-window-coating-cool-buildings-31-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=35420","title":{"rendered":"This clear window coating could cool buildings without using energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have used advanced computing tech and AI to design a clear window coating that could lower the temperature inside buildings, thus saving a whole lot of cooling energy.<\/p>\n<p>Cooling accounts for about 15% of global energy consumption, and it\u2019s only going to get hotter, especially in more tropical climates.<\/p>\n<p>The sun\u2019s ultraviolet and near-infrared light are the parts of the solar spectrum that pass through window glass to heat an enclosed room. <\/p>\n<p>If window coating blocked that light and if that coating radiated \u201cheat from the window\u2019s surface at a wavelength that passes through the atmosphere into outer space,\u201d energy use from cooling could be reduced, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/pressroom\/newsreleases\/2022\/november\/clear-window-coating-could-cool-buildings-without-using-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Chemical Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That, along with not impeding visibility through a window, is kind of a big ask. But researchers at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and Kyung Hee University in Seoul tackled it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>According to their new paper, \u201cHigh-Performance Transparent Radiative Cooler Designed by Quantum Computing\u201d in <em>ACS Energy Letters<\/em>, a scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society, their design of a clear window coating, or \u201ctransparent radiative cooler\u201d (TRC), was a success.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" title=\"This clear window coating could cool buildings without using energy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/ACS-window-film1.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/ACS-window-film1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/ACS-window-film1.jpg?resize=150,120 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/ACS-window-film1.jpg?resize=300,241 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/ACS-window-film1.jpg?resize=350,281 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo: Adapted from ACS Energy Letters 2022, DOI: 10.1021\/acsenergylett.2c01969<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s what they did and how it went:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"16\">\n<p>The team constructed computer models of TRCs consisting of alternating thin layers of common materials like silicon dioxide, silicon nitride, aluminum oxide or titanium dioxide on a glass base, topped with a film of polydimethylsiloxane. They optimized the type, order, and combination of layers using an iterative approach guided by machine learning and quantum computing, which stores data using subatomic particles. This computing method carries out optimization faster and better than conventional computers because it can efficiently test all possible combinations in a fraction of a second. This produced a coating design that, when fabricated, beat the performance of conventionally designed TRCs in addition to one of the best commercial heat-reduction glasses on the market.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This clear window coating could cool buildings without using energy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/cms\/10.1021\/acsenergylett.2c01969\/asset\/images\/large\/nz2c01969_0004.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"690\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>ACS Energy Lett.<\/em> 2022, 7, XXX, 4134-4141<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The researchers wrote that the average annual energy saving over surveyed US cities \u2013 see the bar graphs above \u2013 is 50 MJ\/m<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0if the TRC is used on windows. In cities with hot, dry weather, such as Phoenix, the TRC can potentially save around 86.3 MJ\/m<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0per year, or 31.1% of the cooling energy consumption when conventional windows are used. <\/p>\n<p>They also did the same calculations for selected major cities worldwide. While buildings in all cities could benefit, those in tropical regions would get a greater cooling impact.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say that the clear window coating can be used not only on building windows but on car windows too.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no indication of commercial scaling in the study, but the researchers write that the film \u201ccan be potentially scaled up for practical applications because their fabrication can be achieved using state-of-the-art deposition techniques.\u201d In other words, that\u2019s the process of creating and depositing thin film coatings onto a substrate material.
