As a lifelong BMW fan, you\u2019re only seriously considering a handful of options \u2013 with a BMW EV at the top of your list. It\u2019s a big commitment \u2013 to both your wallet and sustainability \u2013 and should be commended, especially if you\u2019re a long-time petrolhead. But there are some things you should consider before you dive in headfirst to EV ownership. With most BMW EVs offering up to 300 miles of range on a charge, consider how quickly it will take you to deplete your vehicle\u2019s charge. With working from home at an all-time high, you may take\u00a0<em>weeks<\/em>\u00a0to put 300 miles on your vehicle. But many people still have long commutes \u2013 the average in the US is 27.6 miles one way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2021\/one-way-travel-time-to-work-rises.html\">according to the 2021 census<\/a>. Giving some forethought to your future excursions \u2013 before you purchase your first EV \u2013 will make things a lot easier for you after you pick up that sweet new i4, iX, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2022\/06\/09\/bmw-i7-top-5-features\/\">i7<\/a>. But being realistic is also important. While charging stations are becoming increasingly frequent sights, the infrastructure is still in its infancy. <em>Solely<\/em>\u00a0relying on public chargers includes a few inevitable annoyances.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wait times at public chargers are inevitable for some drivers, especially if you live in an area slow to adopt EV technology.<\/li>\n<li>Unmaintained or broken chargers are a sad reality that most EV drivers will eventually face.<\/li>\n<li>Fluctuating pricing can cause a headache \u2013 and wallet aches \u2013 with the occasionally drastic disparity between on and off-peak costs.<\/li>\n<li>Hunting for unfamiliar charging stations isn\u2019t always the most fun in the world \u2013 especially if you\u2019re getting low on range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For these reasons, we recommend seriously considering <a href=\"https:\/\/enphase.com\/ev-chargers?utm_source=bmw_blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=3qoffline\">installing a charger in your home<\/a>. It isn\u2019t as expensive as you think, and you may even qualify for a federal tax rebate! Small business owners adopting BMW EVs with brick-and-mortar locations may also want to research dedicating some space to an EV charging station, as an additional tax rebate could be available to them.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been using ClipperCreek charging stations since 2016 and installed several of them in different personal garages. While it shouldn\u2019t necessarily impact your decision, it\u2019s something you should prepare for. You\u2019re sure to attract a roughly equal number of promoters and detractors, and handling that is sadly still just part of owning an EV.<\/p>\n<p>While it isn\u2019t an exotic like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, any EV \u2013 but especially a BMW EV \u2013 is still something that prompts strong, unsolicited opinions from passers-by. There are so many positives to owning a BMW EV.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Long-term EV ownership will highly reduce carbon emissions when compared to a gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>Electric might get pricy, but it will likely never be as expensive as fueling an internal combustion vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>EVs are less mechanically complex and require less maintenance than internal combustion vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>BMW EVs are some of the fastest accelerating vehicles currently on the market \u2013 electric or otherwise.<\/li>\n<li>BMW EV ownership comes along with over-the-air updates, and the sky\u2019s the limit on what\u2019s possible. Tesla has even increased vehicles\u2019 performance via these updates, and there\u2019s no reason BMW wouldn\u2019t do the same.
