{"id":36199,"date":"2022-11-16T09:03:55","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T14:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=36199"},"modified":"2022-11-16T09:03:55","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T14:03:55","slug":"1134602_waymo-robotaxi-by-zeekr-spy-shots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=36199","title":{"rendered":"Waymo robotaxi by Zeekr spy shots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alphabet Inc.&#8217;s Waymo self-driving division last December said it will add an electric shuttle built by Zeekr to its U.S. robotaxi fleet, and now a prototype has been spotted.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo&#8217;s fleet currently relies on Chrysler Pacifica minivans and Jaguar I-Pace crossovers, though unlike those vehicles, which were originally designed to be driven by a human for private use, the Zeekr will be designed specifically for a self-driving service.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the shuttle will be devoid of a steering wheel and pedals\u2014a design the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently made moves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1135290_nhtsa-no-longer-requires-self-driving-cars-to-have-a-steering-wheel-and-pedals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to allow on public roads<\/a>. The cabin will also be easier to get in and out of thanks to a missing B-pillar and low floor. The system is ranked at Level 4 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1108904_self-driving-cars-a-primer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAE scale of self-driving capability<\/a> as it can drive on its own for extended periods, though only with restrictions. Level 5 is the ultimate goal, as this represents a system that can drive at the same level as a human.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s entirely possible that Zeekr will also launch a version of the shuttle with manual controls to other firms, or even private individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Zeekr is Chinese auto giant Geely&#8217;s new global brand for premium electric vehicles. Zeekr&#8217;s first vehicle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1133917_first-zeekr-001-rolls-off-the-production-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 001 hot hatch<\/a>, went into production last October at a newly constructed plant in China. The 001 is based on Geely&#8217;s dedicated EV platform known as SEA, and it&#8217;s likely that this platform will also be used for the shuttle. Last summer, the service was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1133352_waymo-self-driving-cars-start-ride-service-in-san-francisco\">expanded to parts of San Francisco<\/a>, and Waymo has confirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1137579_next-stop-for-waymo-one-robotaxi-service-will-be-la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">next stop will be Los Angeles<\/a>. Waymo is also developing a self-driving delivery service, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1134209_waymo-to-transport-goods-using-self-driving-semi-trailer-truck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known as Waymo Via<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1134645_zeekr-and-mobileye-to-develop-level-4-self-driving-car-for-retail-sale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeekr is developing its own vehicle<\/a> with Level 4 self-driving capability in a partnership with Intel&#8217;s Mobileye self-driving division.
