Some of the company&#8217;s top executives said they&#8217;re aware <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">dealers<\/a> want a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">truck<\/a>, but their main focus is launching more <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">crossovers and SUVs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen will soon plant its stake in the truck segment via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/11\/21\/vw-scout-website-forum-teaser\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the newly-created Scout brand<\/a>, which aims to put a modern and electric spin on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/13\/vw-scout-ev-international-harvester-history\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the International Harvester Scout<\/a> sold from the 1960s to the 1980s. The range will initially include an SUV and a pickup designed with a focus on off-roading and built on a new platform. Sharing this platform with the Volkswagen brand isn&#8217;t planned, executives said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the moment, our focus on the lineup doesn&#8217;t include it. We have a clear lineup all the way through the second half of this decade. Then again, in the American market, if you don&#8217;t play in certain segments then you have to stay in a certain market share area. But the question of [the new &#8220;Rugged SUV&#8221; platform] is not our priority at the moment,&#8221; Volkswagen brand boss Thomas Sch\u00e4fer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/cars-concepts\/vw-pickup-truck-remains-just-dream-dealers-now\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">told<\/a> <em>Automotive News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Pablo Di Si, the head of Volkswagen&#8217;s North American division, echoed these comments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What are the relevant segments in the U.S.? SUVs and pickups. Are we going to have a pickup? I will try. Do we have one now? No. Right now, my focus is on strengthening the SUV portfolio. I will address pickups at the right time, but right now I have other issues to tackle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen has experimented with several different types of trucks in recent years. It unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/08\/26\/vw-atlas-tanoak-pickup-concept-driving-review-monterey-77539\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">a concept called Atlas Tanoak<\/a> (pictured) in 2018 that shared its basic unibody platform with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/10\/30\/2021-vw-atlas-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the Atlas SUV<\/a>. If launched, the pickup would have competed directly against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/2023-honda-ridgeline-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the Honda Ridgeline<\/a>. Volkswagen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/08\/24\/vw-atlas-tanoak-production-monterey\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">hinted<\/a> it was considering turning the design study into a production model but ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/02\/07\/vw-atlas-tanoak-dead-smaller-pickup-possible\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">canned the project<\/a>. Fast-forward to 2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/04\/15\/vw-tarok-pickup-concept-new-york-auto-show\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">a second pickup concept called Tarok<\/a> made its debut at the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/new-york-auto-show\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">New York Auto Show<\/a> to &#8220;gauge market reaction.&#8221; It was built on a unibody platform as well. While the city-friendly truck may still reach production in South America, nothing suggests we&#8217;ll see it here.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell whether Volkswagen once again sells a pickup in the United States \u2014 it hasn&#8217;t offered one since the Pennsylvania-built <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/rabbit\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Rabbit<\/a> Pickup (also known as the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/cadillac\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Caddy<\/a>) retired in 1983.
