But a change could be underway, according to a recent report from S&amp;P Global Mobility.<\/p>\n<p>The 22 heartland states\u2014essentially every state in the contiguous U.S. excluding the East, West, and Gulf Coasts\u2014represented 27.1% of U.S. retail vehicle sales through August, but their share of EV sales has remained at 15.5% from 2021 into this year, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">&#8220;There is no doubt that the lack of charger availability is an influence in Midwestern states, but it is not the factor,\u201d James Martin, associate director of consulting for S&amp;P Global Mobility, said in a statement. \u201cAn equally strong factor is the availability of product in form factors that customers are willing to purchase.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100854289_m\" title=\"2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet_100854289_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/chevrolet_100854289_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet_100854289_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet_100854289_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/chevrolet_100854289_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/chevrolet_100854289_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Martin specifically mentioned a lack of affordable family EV crossovers. But some new crossover models, such as the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, are scheduled to debut over the next few years. And while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135115_its-easier-to-buy-kia-ev6-than-hyundai-ioniq-5-heres-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyundai<\/a> simply doesn&#8217;t offer its EVs in many heartland states, that&#8217;s increasingly becoming an outlier position. Researchers also noted significant interest in EVs among heartland car buyers.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">&#8220;More acceptance and much broader consumer awareness is resulting in a natural progression of adoption from the coasts to the heartland,&#8221; Tom Libby, associate director of Loyalty Solutions and Industry Analysis at S&amp;P Global Mobility, said in a statement. That seems to be backed up by\u00a0another recent study, from\u00a0iSeeCars, found that demand for used EVs, along with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1136403_study-demand-for-hybrids-evs-soaring-in-rural-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soaring in rural America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100848882_m\" title=\"2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/hyundai-ioniq-5_100848882_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The buildout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1137165_35-states-get-the-green-light-for-7-5-billion-national-ev-charging-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal EV charging network<\/a>\u2014and all states&#8217; involvement\u2014may play a role in catalyzing growth and interest. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134836_convenience-stores-want-to-bring-ev-charging-to-rural-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Convenience stores<\/a> also think they can play a significant role by offering locations for EV charging in rural America.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Public charging infrastructure isn&#8217;t of course the only factor at play.
