The Prius lineup did get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1120321_toyota-prius-awd-e-going-light-on-the-rear-motor-helps-it-hit-50-mpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prius AWD-e<\/a> all-wheel-drive version and a much better Prius Prime plug-in hybrid in its current and outgoing version, but it remains a pared-down family, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1072665_2012-toyota-prius-c-first-drive-report-and-full-details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prius C<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1072371_2012-toyota-prius-v-hybrid-wagon-drive-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prius V<\/a> long gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Further, direct aero-efficiency rivals like the Chevy Volt and the Honda Clarity are dust in the wind. Even the Hyundai Ioniq that looked like the Prius\u2019 worst nightmare on arrival fought its fight and already moved on, giving way to a fresh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1129179_hyundai-reboots-ioniq-as-an-ev-brand-starting-with-ioniq-5-crossover-in-fall-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ioniq EV sub-brand<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, hybrids are becoming the preferred way to get a gasoline vehicle\u2014the one that gets the best mileage and lowest ownership costs and, oftentimes, the one that also drives the best.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Not knowing where exactly the Prius was headed\u2014and just ahead of the next-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1137875_2023-toyota-prius-prime-phev-aims-for-50-more-electric-miles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Toyota Prius<\/a>\u2019 debut\u2014I scheduled some time with the outgoing Prius last month. And keeping an eye on its greatest asset, its gas mileage, I aimed to make sense of where this efficiency icon stands today.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Revisiting a gas mileage champ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">First, I aimed to simply drive the Prius as I would a commuter car. That means nearly 100 miles of mixed commuter conditions in its Normal mode ranging from suburban stop-and-go to some backroads, as well as 30 miles of faster-moving freeway driving, up to 75 mph or so\u2014even including fast-moving jaunts in Power mode. The Prius reported a 55-mpg average.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I then switched to Eco mode but ran the climate control as normal and took the Prius on my 53-mile round trip route\u2014one that includes 700 feet of elevation change and a near-equal mix of under-65-mph freeways, suburban boulevards, and semi-rural rolling-hill backroads. I\u2019ve taken a number of hybrids on this loop, and this time I saw the highest number I\u2019d ever seen on it: more than 65 mpg, according to the trip meter\u2014with outside temps still in the 60s and low 70s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100866037_m\" title=\"2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"768\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2022-toyota-prius-nightshade_100866037_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Finally, keeping it in Eco, I covered two different trips that took me across the Portland metro area, intentionally keeping to surface streets and away from fast-moving freeways. Ride quality is great. Steering is light and precise, and the car feels nimble in moderate-speed curves and stable at the 75+ mph that\u2019s typical for some American freeway cruises. Thanks to what must be some great aerodynamic work, mileage doesn\u2019t seem to take a plunge as soon as you pass 65 or 70 mph, as it does in many other hybrids. On curvy roads, the steering doesn\u2019t center well or let you know where it is, so unwinding the steering wheel is more of an adventure than in most vehicles. There\u2019s not a lot of torque off the line or out of lower-speed corners. Power mode improved the gutless feeling out of corners, but it didn&#8217;t help the 121-hp Prius take off any quicker from a stop. While it\u2019s too early to parse that out here, our time with a very good but also clearly flawed outgoing model served as a reminder that Toyota has kept moving forward with the non-plug-in Prius\u2014in a way budget-challenged apartment-dwellers will most definitely appreciate.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The price is right, and the mileage is astoundingly good.
