{"id":36857,"date":"2022-11-25T09:03:55","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T14:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=36857"},"modified":"2022-11-25T09:03:55","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T14:03:55","slug":"gm-ceo-brands-stopped-tweeting-after-elon-musk-took-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=36857","title":{"rendered":"GM CEO, Brands Stopped Tweeting After Elon Musk Took Over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few days after Elon Musk finalized his acquisition of Twitter in late October, General Motors announced it was pausing paid advertising on the social media platform as it evaluated Twitter&#8217;s new direction.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, GM said it would continue to use the platform to interact with customers. <em>Bloomberg<\/em> looked at GM brands&#8217; and CEO Mary Barra&#8217;s Twitter accounts recently and found they haven&#8217;t posted since October 27, the day <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/619174\/elon-musk-first-day-twitter\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22619174%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22elon-musk-first-day-twitter%22%7D\">Elon Musk closed his $44 billion purchase of the microblogging platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Mary Barra and the official accounts of General Motors, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC haven&#8217;t posted a single tweet, although the brands continue to reply to questions from customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This hints at a company-wide policy and shows that GM&#8217;s retreat from Twitter was more comprehensive than indicated <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/619341\/musk-twitter-takeover-citroen-is-concerned-gm-pauses-advertising\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22619341%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22musk-twitter-takeover-citroen-is-concerned-gm-pauses-advertising%22%7D\">when it paused advertising last month<\/a>. <em>Automotive News<\/em> contacted the automaker, which replied expressing concerns about the platform&#8217;s new ownership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With a competitor owning the platform, it&#8217;s important for us to ensure our advertising strategies and data can be safely managed,&#8221; GM said via email, adding the company sees Twitter as &#8220;just one of many channels available&#8221; to share information and would &#8220;choose the channels and platforms that can be most effective at any point in time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22en%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3EWe%20are%20making%20big%20investments%20to%20give%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FGM%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3E%40GM%3C%2Fa%3E%20customers%20a%20seamless%20transition%20to%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fhashtag%2FEVs%3Fsrc%3Dhash%26amp%3Bref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3E%23EVs%3C%2Fa%3E%2C%20including%20working%20to%20provide%20access%20to%20more%20than%20100%2C000%20charge%20points%20throughout%20the%20U.S.%20and%20Canada.%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fhashtag%2FYahooFinanceAMS22%3Fsrc%3Dhash%26amp%3Bref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3E%23YahooFinanceAMS22%3C%2Fa%3E%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FwfjkL1ZmTB%22%3Ehttps%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FwfjkL1ZmTB%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Mary%20Barra%20(%40mtbarra)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fmtbarra%2Fstatus%2F1585611527679270913%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3EOctober%2027%2C%202022%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E%20\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>The company also noted that it would engage as necessary with customers; it didn&#8217;t address Mary Barra&#8217;s absence from Twitter, though. Other GM top execs appear to have neglected their Twitter accounts in recent weeks as well. Duncan Aldred, Global VP Buick &amp; GMC, last tweeted on September 1, while GM President Mark Reuss&#8217;s account is now blank, even though he used to be quite active.<\/p>\n<p>Other top executives, such as CFO Paul Jacobson, design boss Michael Simcoe or GM North America head Stephen Carlisle don&#8217;t appear to be present on Twitter either.\u00a0However, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/general-motors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">General Motors<\/a>&#8216; BrightDrop electric van business and Cruise autonomous vehicle startup, in which the automaker has a controlling stake, have continued to tweet\u2014as have their CEOs, Travis Katz and Kyle Vogt.<\/p>\n<p>Cruise spokesman Aaron McLear told <em>Bloomberg<\/em> the company finds Twitter to be an effective away to communicate with users and people in the tech community.<\/p>\n<p>Other major automakers and industry leaders are still tweeting, including Ford Motor Company and <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/591144\/jim-farley-ford-is-not-trolling-tesla-with-adapter-just-helpful\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22591144%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22jim-farley-ford-is-not-trolling-tesla-with-adapter-just-helpful%22%7D\">its CEO Jim Farley<\/a>, BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Renault, Stellantis, Toyota, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/volkswagen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Volkswagen<\/a> and more.\u00a0However, the VW Group and its brands have halted all paid activities on Twitter until further notice, a spokesman told <em>Reuters<\/em>.
