Big pickups could launch them into the mainstream.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/new-ford-f-150-pickup-why-its-americas-bestselling-truck-2020-6?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Americans love their trucks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s good news for anyone considering swapping their gas-drinking <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/f_150\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">F-150<\/a> for something a little greener. They all have a bed and some electric motors, and none come particularly cheap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T couldn&#8217;t be more different. The Lightning&#8217;s 775 pound-feet of torque and 580 horsepower enable it to scoot to 60 mph in around four seconds. Acceleration is instantaneous and a little scary in such a big vehicle. At highway speeds, the Lightning is surprisingly quiet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the optional larger <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> pack, the Lightning earns a very healthy range rating of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/PowerSearch.do?action=noform&amp;pageno=1&amp;path=3&amp;rowLimit=50&amp;srchtyp=newAfv&amp;vtype=Electric&amp;year1=2022&amp;year2=2023\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">320 miles from the EPA<\/a>. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ford-f150-electric-lightning-frunk-best-feature-2022-5?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">spacious front trunk<\/a> provides lockable storage that can fit a few duffel bags. Using several outlets scattered throughout the bed and frunk, the Lightning&#8217;s battery can share enough energy to power a house for several days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Lighting has the most mainstream appeal of the three trucks and a relatively attainable price to match. The 2023 model starts at $51,974. But if you want maximum range, get ready to fork over $81,000 and up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rivian R1T<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/c4c9eca1c753239915fa6081358dfa2c\" alt=\"[EMBARGO 9\/28 DNP] Rivian R1T\" data-uuid=\"dacb1ae5-3aa2-3438-8b9a-7ce623558b32\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The Rivian R1T.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the other end of the spectrum, you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rivian-r1t-ev-electric-pickup-first-drive-impressions-photos-2021-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">the R1T<\/a>, the very first model from the startup <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/rivian\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Rivian<\/a>. The firm took the basic contours of a pickup and grabbed the opportunity to create something completely new and different.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a high-end, tech-heavy, off-road truck aimed at outdoorsy types.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/8c950ef92159a9c450feba4ca05d6892\" alt=\"[EMBARGO 9\/28 DNP] Rivian R1T\" data-uuid=\"466e4780-e215-3a58-9795-e8c0aa20bf19\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The Rivian R1T.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-model-y-electric-suv-flaws-cons-2022-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Like Tesla<\/a>, Rivian shuns practically all regular buttons in favor of a big touchscreen that controls almost everything in the vehicle, from drive modes to the direction of the air vents. Tapping a screen for every little thing can get tiresome and distracting, but Rivian&#8217;s interface is beautifully designed. And the lack of switches allows for a clean, minimalist interior.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What mainly blew me away about the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/rivian\/r1t\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">R1T<\/a> were its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rivian-electric-ev-truck-pickup-coolest-features-r1t-2021-10?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">many, many thoughtful and one-of-a-kind features<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/fedce412bfe9a0676ca2228e9a3f8aa3\" alt=\"[EMBARGO 9\/28 DNP] Rivian R1T\" data-uuid=\"56469376-eaa9-3eb4-95d4-75f026e3912b\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The Rivian R1T.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There&#8217;s the Gear Tunnel, a cargo area that runs sideways behind the rear seats and has doors that double as steps or seats. There&#8217;s an air compressor built into the bed for inflating tires after a day on the beach or trails. There&#8217;s a flashlight that pops out from the driver&#8217;s door and a portable speaker that lives under the center console.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the truck&#8217;s off-road capabilities are off the charts thanks to a monstrous powertrain, a comprehensive system of cameras, and an adjustable air suspension that provides up to 15 inches of ground clearance. I&#8217;m a novice off-roader if there ever was one, and I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rivian-r1t-ev-review-electric-pickup-off-roading-trail-driving-2021-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">found great success on the trails<\/a> simply pointing the R1T at treacherous obstacles and pressing the accelerator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/5fe65075c1c3927ad4a0bd2f6520fd7a\" alt=\"The 2022 Rivian R1T.\" data-uuid=\"8a6954d7-71c0-35af-8d26-034b0f60e497\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The<br \/>\n  <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2022-Rivian-R1T\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">2022 Rivian R1T<\/a>.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Rivian<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For now, the R1T starts at $87,000 and is only available with four motors and a 314-mile battery pack. Cheaper versions are on the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>GMC Hummer EV<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/a5f60c0dfda96a7121323523ecbb0c1e\" alt=\"The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.\" data-uuid=\"bfafaddf-3377-375b-a4f0-0dfdf57e068c\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new Hummer is a lot like the one that was discontinued 12 years ago. It&#8217;s huge, excessive, and above all else a very good way to get noticed. The main difference is that this one guzzles electrons, not gas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Hummer EV is supremely capable, particularly in the $113,000 Edition 1 trim that I tested. It boasts 1,000 horsepower, three motors, a positively ridiculous 60-mph sprint of three seconds, and a segment-leading 329 miles of range. It&#8217;s billed as a tremendous off-roader, but I wasn&#8217;t able to test that out during my weekend loan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/c749610687976b11ba3bae0ca8042fac\" alt=\"The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.\" data-uuid=\"ba2d2771-4483-3848-91ae-691ca8465a18\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plus, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/gmc-hummer-ev-electric-pickup-truck-price-review-crab-walk-photos-2022-11?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">packed with outlandish features<\/a> that are just plain fun.<\/p>\n<p>It has a removable roof made up of four glass panels. It has a large front trunk. It has a spacious, flashy interior and a screen that plays video game-like graphics every time you switch drive modes. (When you switch into Off-Road mode, for example, the display shows a Hummer trundling across the surface of Mars.)<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/34c959d5a4bbd9a826cc6a016b0762e8\" alt=\"The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.\" data-uuid=\"c727cb4d-d060-33ea-9dd4-c8533a329e12\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The addition of rear-wheel steering enables the Hummer&#8217;s most-hyped feature. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/gmc-hummer-crab-mode-crawl-diagonally-across-sand-ev-truck-2020-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">Crab Walk switched on<\/a>, the Hummer&#8217;s rear wheels turn the same direction as the fronts, allowing it to drive diagonally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fun to experience, but doesn&#8217;t seem all that practical on a day-to-day basis. And that pretty much sums up the Hummer as a whole.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Verdict<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/33748e548c75561d878c520c031aa1ca\" alt=\"The 2022 Rivian R1T.\" data-uuid=\"22abe5b0-e107-3134-998f-c46d8699a2be\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The 2022 Rivian R1T.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These trucks serve such vastly different needs and personalities that crowning a winner is almost no use. It&#8217;s kind of like comparing a mountain bike, a road bike, and a folding bike \u2014 they&#8217;re just different.
