Hitachi Energy\u2019s new Wireless SPU Indicators allow utilities to monitor the grid remotely, in real time, with automated visual inspection rounds.<\/p>\n<p>The SPU monitors the current and thermal load of surge arresters \u2013 which protect equipment from surges in the power system \u2013 installed in wildfire risk areas. <\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s a thermal overload in the grid, the SPU interrupts the current flow and disconnects the surge arrester, thus preventing any arcing \u2013 which is when a circuit becomes overloaded and overheats \u2013 sparking, or ejection of hot particles that could potentially start a wildfire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/Wireless-SPU-Indicator-PIC-1.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-269201\" width=\"516\" height=\"365\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hitachi Energy\u2019s new Wireless SPU Indicator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A visual indicator on the SPU lets the utility field crew know that it needs to be replaced. Hundreds of thousands of SPUs installed in some of the world\u2019s most wildfire-prone areas, such as in the United States and Australia, have had a real impact in preventing wildfires.
