(Think two <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/tacoma\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Toyota Tacomas<\/a>, three Honda Civics, or 24 Shaquille O&#8217;Neals.) Moreover, the GMC Hummer EV is in many ways a supersized gas guzzler for a new era. It repackages many of the same flaws of hulking SUVs and trucks of years past \u2014 and proves not all zero-emission cars are created equal.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>EVs can be energy guzzlers too<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the whole, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">electric cars<\/a> use less energy than gas-powered ones. But they aren&#8217;t all equally efficient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No surprise here: The Hummer needs more electricity than any other EV on the market to move its elephantine frame. The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/epa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a39049358\/2022-gmc-hummer-ev-pickup-epa-specs\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">rates the pickup at 47 MPGe<\/a> (miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent). For comparison, the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+3\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Tesla Model 3<\/a> sedan is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/PowerSearch.do?action=noform&amp;pageno=1&amp;path=3&amp;rowLimit=50&amp;srchtyp=newAfv&amp;vtype=Electric&amp;year1=2022&amp;year2=2023\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">nearly three times as efficient<\/a>, earning a rating of 132 MPGe. The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/f_150+lightning\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Ford F-150 Lightning<\/a>, another <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/truck\/fuel_economy-electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">electric truck<\/a>, gets 70 MPGe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This has real consequences: Since the US gets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=74&amp;t=11\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">61% of its energy from oil, coal, and natural gas<\/a>, the more electricity a car needs, the more pollution it creates upstream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-09\/driving-cleaner-report.pdf\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Union of Concerned Scientists put it<\/a>: &#8220;Both EV cars and trucks are much cleaner than their gasoline counterparts, but electric trucks are responsible for more <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">global warming<\/a> emissions than electric cars simply because trucks are larger and heavier.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>\n <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/708a833857d8f3f8e8ca4a0e95032457\" alt=\"The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.\" data-uuid=\"708aef63-218d-334f-bbd5-a48ee0cdd5c1\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption>\n   The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Hummer EV is also resource-intensive to manufacture, requiring a ginormous (and weighty) battery to give people the 300-plus miles of range they desire. You could produce <a href=\"https:\/\/media.chevrolet.com\/media\/us\/en\/chevrolet\/2022-bolt-euv-bolt-ev.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2021\/feb\/0214-boltev-bolteuv-specifications.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">three Chevrolet Bolts<\/a> with the same battery cells consumed by one Hummer. And raw battery materials like lithium are already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/startups-tackling-auto-industry-lithium-shortage-electric-vehicle-batteries-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">in short supply<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How many more electric cars could we build that are a reasonable size if we just reallocated all the stuff going into that 3,000-pound Hummer EV battery toward sedans or more reasonably sized cars, let alone e-cargo bikes?,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidzipper.com\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">David Zipper<\/a>, a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School&#8217;s Taubman Center for State and Local Government, told Insider.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The 4.5-ton elephant in the room<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Hummer EV is a full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/trucks\/f150\/models\/f150-lariat\/#:~:text=4%2C345%20lbs.,5%2C025%20lbs.\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">4,000 pounds heavier<\/a> than a well-optioned, gas-powered <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/f_150\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Ford F-150<\/a>. And it&#8217;s even chunkier than the original military-inspired Hummer <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hummer\/h1\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">H1<\/a> that put the brand on the map. It&#8217;s so massive that it <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2006\/08\/25\/brooklyn-bridges-suv-ban-hidden-in-plain-sight\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">isn&#8217;t allowed on the Brooklyn Bridge<\/a> and that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">General Motors<\/a> isn&#8217;t required to display its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\" rel=\"noopener\">EPA<\/a> efficiency stats on a window sticker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Extra weight and size in a vehicle don&#8217;t just breed inefficiency. Research shows it can also lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/officialdocuments\/publicdisplaydocumentpdf\/?cote=ENV%2FEPOC%2FWPIEEP%282020%294%2FFINAL&amp;docLanguage=En\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">increased emissions from tire and brake wear<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/car-safety\/the-hidden-dangers-of-big-trucks\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">greater risk to others in a crash<\/a> (both from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/news\/detail\/suvs-other-large-vehicles-often-hit-pedestrians-while-turning\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">bigger blind spots<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/digest\/nov11\/vehicle-weight-and-automotive-fatalities#:~:text=The%20authors%20find%20that%20being,risk%2C%20conditional%20on%20a%20collision.\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">just plain physics<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Responding to questions about all of this, a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">GM<\/a> spokesperson noted that the Hummer EV is meant to be a so-called &#8220;halo vehicle&#8221; that demonstrates the potential of EVs. She also mentioned that GM engineers took mass into account when designing the truck&#8217;s brakes and other systems and talked up its safety features. Some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.org\/resources\/news-releases\/GHSA\/Ped-Spotlight-Addendum21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">research attributes\u00a0<\/a>recent spikes in pedestrian road deaths to factors other than just bigger vehicles, like <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/drunk+driving\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">drunk driving<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/speeding\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">speeding<\/a>, and infrastructure shortcomings, she added.<\/p>\n<figure>\n <strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/insider_articles_922\/3269df357f57620ac81e63ada83dda08\" alt=\"The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.\" data-uuid=\"40400d6b-ef13-35ea-b2ea-78d2bfa84840\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption>\n   The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1.<br \/>\n  <span class=\"copyright\">Tim Levin\/Insider<\/span><br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new Hummer isn&#8217;t unique here. All battery-powered cars are heavier than their gas counterparts \u2014 but it is the biggest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, switching Americans over to electric cars will require presenting them with lots of options across the automotive spectrum. Someone who drives a lifted diesel truck isn&#8217;t all of a sudden going to embrace a cute little hatchback. And research has shown that electrifying pickup trucks <a href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/study-greater-greenhouse-gas-reductions-for-pickup-truck-electrification-than-for-other-light-duty-vehicles\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">puts a bigger dent in greenhouse-gas emissions<\/a> than doing the same for smaller cars.<\/p>\n<p>Still, some transportation experts think more should be done to steer buyers away from huge, energy-guzzling EVs.
