The electric truck is now making a historic debut as the US Forest Service (USFS) begins transitioning its fleet of around 17,000 gas-powered cars to zero-emission EVs.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-270114\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9669137141129422\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ford unveiled the electric version of its best-selling pickup, the F-150 Lightning, in 2021. After an overwhelmingly positive response, Ford quickly accumulated <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/12\/07\/ford-f-150-lightning-reservations-3-years-backlog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 200,000 reservations<\/a> (three years of backlog) by December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Eager buyers <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/05\/26\/ford-starts-customer-deliveries-f-150-lightning-electric-pickup-truck\/#:~:text=It%20was%20built%20on%20April,was%20much%20higher%20than%20anticipated.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began receiving<\/a> their F-150 Lightning pickups in May after Ford started production in April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Through November, Ford has <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/12\/02\/fords-electric-vehicle-sales-outshine-gas-cars-in-november-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold 13,258 F-150 Lightning EVs<\/a>, remaining the top-selling electric truck in America as the automaker ramps production. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, to advance the transition to a clean energy economy and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, the US has implemented Executive Order 14057 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/12\/08\/executive-order-on-catalyzing-clean-energy-industries-and-jobs-through-federal-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability<\/a>), which requires all federal light-duty vehicle purchases to be electric by 2027. <\/p>\n<p>The US Forest Service is taking its first steps to transition its fleet of over 17,000 vehicles to all-electric, starting with three Ford F-150 Lightning trucks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Ford-lightning-us-forests-1\" class=\"wp-image-270161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg 1400w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=150,75 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=300,150 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=768,384 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=1024,512 1024w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=350,175 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=140,70 140w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Ford-lightning-us-forests-1.jpeg?resize=290,145 290w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2023 Ford F-150 Lightning\/Source: Ford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-us-forest-service-introduces-ford-lightning-evs-to-its-fleet\">US Forest Service introduces Ford Lightning EVs to its fleet<\/h2>\n<p>Since USFS vehicles are tasked with frequent off-roading and extreme weather conditions, the agency is testing the Ford Lightning trucks to develop best practices.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Outside<\/em>, Jason Kirchner, a spokesperson from the agency, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>The\u00a0Forest\u00a0Service\u00a0is embarking on an exciting study of the first-ever use of electric vehicles in a natural resources field setting. The research will determine the feasibility of electric vehicles in field-work settings, helping the agency determine the right tool for the job when it comes to electric fleet vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/outdoor-adventure\/environment\/forest-service-electric-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> EV pilot program<\/a> will help the USFS create a base of knowledge regarding optimal fleet size and charging infrastructure. <em>Outside <\/em>says since the vehicles will be tested in extreme conditions (in the White Mountains), the study will \u201chold applicability to outdoor enthusiasts\u201d in addition. <\/p>\n<p>According to Kirchner, the Ford F-150 lightning is currently the only electric pickup available so far through the Government Services Administration. The US Forests Service is using the base model featuring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>230-mile range<\/li>\n<li>Four-wheel drive<\/li>\n<li>2,000 lb. payload<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The agency says that since the Lightning will be recharged at night, it will not require significant charging investments. In fact, the Ford Lightning fleet model is cheaper than the entry-level gas-powered consumer F-150.<\/p>\n<h2>Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>Ford did its own testing in extreme weather conditions to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/11\/23\/how-you-can-maximize-your-ford-f-150-lightning-range-this-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best practices for Lightning drivers<\/a>. The electric pickup is paving the way for government agencies, businesses, and consumers to go zero-emission while still enjoying the same benefits as its gas-powered peers and more.<\/p>\n<p>Deploying EVs in our national forests is one of the best places to start transitioning the government fleet. <\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s electric pickup is not the only EV truck to be used in a forest setting.
