Burning questions on social media run the gamut from the simple \u201cWhy can\u2019t they bring it to the US?\u201d to the silly \u201cWho can afford to buy this stuff?\u201d. BMW apparently has asked would-be owners to apply \u2013 after which a lottery will take place, and the vehicles will be sold to the winners. M CEO Franciscus \u201cFrank\u201d van Meel has said that there is technically no limitation to where the cars could end up. But he does confirm that the vehicle is being built only to European specifications. Why? Homologation costs, of course. Van Meel says it is unaffordable to homologate a vehicle with only a 50-unit production run. Some choice comments from BMW aficiondaos include \u201cThe biggest missed opportunity,\u201d \u201cI have 36 dollars cash on me right now, I will take the car,\u201d and my personal favorite, \u201cAny future plans for the E92 M3?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While, undeniably, three-quarters of a million euros is a princely sum, van Meel seems to disagree. He refers us to the recent sale of Jochen Neerpasch\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/rmsothebys.com\/en\/auctions\/mu22\/munich\/lots\/c0017-1980-bmw-m1\/1295469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M1 at RM Sotheby\u2019s<\/a> just a few weeks ago. It brought an impressive \u20ac792,500 (roughly $833,000), and as van Meel eloquently states, \u201cthere were more than 50 of those. This is the next new icon,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n<p>And he might not be wrong. The car is hand-assembled, with hand-painted stripes and hand-made carbon fiber body panels. It is as close as possible to an homage to a true racing legend. This certainly makes it desirable and an integral part of any serious collector\u2019s garage. But, citing this vehicle as an \u201cemotional\u201d decision \u201cnot about making money,\u201d it made sense to van Meel as \u201cwe only celebrate 50 years once\u2026it\u2019s not about making money \u2013 it\u2019s about making a point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And though I\u2019ll never drive one of these things (there will be no press cars) and will consider myself lucky to even see one on the road, I\u2019m glad BMW M went the extra mile. There\u2019s more good news too.
