The 3.0 CSL is officially, um, official, and there is still a lot we don\u2019t know. Burning questions on social media run the gamut from the simple \u201cWhy can\u2019t they bring it to the US?\u201d to the silly \u201cWho can afford to buy this stuff?\u201d. Well, after speaking with the current CEO of BMW M, Fran van Meel, we have some additional insight into the pricing, why the 3.0 CSL isn\u2019t about making a quick buck, and how on Earth anyone would ever even get one of these things.<\/p>\n

Application Accepted: the 3.0 CSL\u2019s Unique Allocation Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n

That\u2019s right \u2013 if you want a chance to own one of the 50 (technically, 51 counting the museum car), you\u2019ll need to apply. BMW apparently has asked would-be owners to apply \u2013 after which a lottery will take place, and the vehicles will be sold to the winners. M CEO Franciscus \u201cFrank\u201d van Meel has said that there is technically no limitation to where the cars could end up. But he does confirm that the vehicle is being built only to European specifications. Why? Homologation costs, of course. Van Meel says it is unaffordable to homologate a vehicle with only a 50-unit production run. And he\u2019s probably right.<\/p>\n

Competitive Pricing, Kind Of<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pricing is another sticking point among the legions of social media fans of the brand. Some choice comments from BMW aficiondaos include \u201cThe biggest missed opportunity,\u201d \u201cI have 36 dollars cash on me right now, I will take the car,\u201d and my personal favorite, \u201cAny future plans for the E92 M3?\u201d<\/p>\n

While, undeniably, three-quarters of a million euros is a princely sum, van Meel seems to disagree. He refers us to the recent sale of Jochen Neerpasch\u2019s M1 at RM Sotheby\u2019s<\/a> just a few weeks ago. It brought an impressive \u20ac792,500 (roughly $833,000), and as van Meel eloquently states, \u201cthere were more than 50 of those. This is the next new icon,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n

And he might not be wrong. The car is hand-assembled, with hand-painted stripes and hand-made carbon fiber body panels. It is as close as possible to an homage to a true racing legend. This certainly makes it desirable and an integral part of any serious collector\u2019s garage. Van Meel mentioned that the pricing is being disclosed to customers \u2013 who seem to still be in the application process \u2013 and that it is \u201cin the direction\u201d of the originally-quoted \u20ac750,000 mark.<\/p>\n

3.0 CSL: Icing on the Cake and Indicative of the Future\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Parting notes on the new BMW 3.0 CSL \u2013 BMW M never had to make it. \u201cWe didn\u2019t really need<\/em>\u00a0something special,\u201d Frank states. 2022 saw the announcement or production start of the i4 M50, XM, M3 Touring<\/a>, and M4 CSL<\/a>, an exhilarating year for BMW M already. But, citing this vehicle as an \u201cemotional\u201d decision \u201cnot about making money,\u201d it made sense to van Meel as \u201cwe only celebrate 50 years once\u2026it\u2019s not about making money \u2013 it\u2019s about making a point.\u201d<\/p>\n

And though I\u2019ll never drive one of these things (there will be no press cars) and will consider myself lucky to even see one on the road, I\u2019m glad BMW M went the extra mile. There\u2019s more good news too. Regarding future coach-built projects like the 3.0 CSL, Frank says it\u2019s a possibility. \u201cIt has to make a point,\u201d he says, \u201cIt has to be framed in [the] context.\u201d<\/p>\n
