The SUV revolution went into high gear with the introduction of the 1991 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/explorer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Ford Explorer<\/a> and 1993 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jeep\/grand+cherokee\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Jeep Grand Cherokee<\/a>, and sales of sedans, hatchbacks, and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/minivan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">minivans<\/a> began their steady decline. The Detroit companies were in good shape to cash in on the commuter-truck craze, with plenty of additional models ready for a quick slathering of luxury features. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Toyota<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Mitsubishi<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Nissan<\/a>, and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/isuzu\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Isuzu<\/a> were ready as well \u2026 but <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Honda<\/a> was completely unprepared for the Next Big Thing at that point. With American sales absolutely critical to Honda (which has never held much market share for four-wheeled vehicles in its home country), a deal was made to rebadge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/11\/27\/junkyard-gem-1997-acura-slx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the Isuzu Trooper as the Acura SLX<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/04\/junkyard-find-1996-honda-passport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the Isuzu Rodeo as the Honda Passport<\/a> while an all-Honda big SUV could be developed. That SUV was the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/acura\/mdx\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Acura MDX<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2001-Acura-MDX\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">debuted for the 2001 model year<\/a>. Here&#8217;s one of those first-year <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/acura\/mdx\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">MDXs<\/a>, a huge turning point in Honda history, found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littletonupull.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">a Denver-area self-service boneyard<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/10\/27132625\/22-2001-Acura-MDX-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oh, sure, Honda began selling the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/cr_v\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">CR-V<\/a> over here in 1997 and so wasn&#8217;t <em>completely<\/em> out of the SUV game during the 1990s, but that little Civic-based machine was never going to lure away many <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/explorer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Explorer<\/a> or even <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mitsubishi\/montero\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Montero<\/a> shoppers. The MDX was a proper three-row <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">crossover SUV<\/a>, despite being based on the same platform as the not-so-imposing <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/accord\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Accord<\/a>, and a Honda-badged version (the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/pilot\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Pilot<\/a>) followed two years later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/10\/27132620\/17-2001-Acura-MDX-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s that third row, which looks quite cramped, but so what? MDX sales <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acura_MDX#Sales_figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">started out respectable and stayed that way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/10\/27132617\/14-2001-Acura-MDX-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Every 2001-2013 MDX ever sold here came with a VTEC-equipped V6, automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive (some later MDXs could be bought with front-wheel-drive). This engine is a 3.5-liter DOHC plant rated at 240 horsepower and 245 pound-feet, decent enough for a truck that tipped the scales at well beyond two tons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/10\/27132613\/09-2001-Acura-MDX-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The MSRP on this truck was $34,370, which amounts to around $58,260 in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars. The base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2001-Ford-Explorer\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">&#8217;01 Ford Explorer<\/a> started at just $25,210, but the swankified Eddie Bauer Edition was better-suited to the Acura-shopper demographic and listed at $32,025. You could buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2001-Mitsubishi-Montero-XLS__4dr_4x4\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">a new Montero XLS<\/a> and do some serious off-roading for $31,397 that year, but it had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military-today.com\/trucks\/type_73_kogata.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">warlord-grade ride<\/a> to go with its warlord-grade abilities in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentandsociety.org\/exhibitions\/wilderness-babel\/bundok-filipino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">bund\u00f3ks<\/a>. The most intimidating rival for the MDX, from Honda&#8217;s point of view, must have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2001-Lexus-RX+300\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">the Lexus RX 300<\/a> and its $33,955 starting price tag. Sure, just two rows of seats, but the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lexus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">Lexus<\/a> brand stomped Acura for snob appeal at the time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/10\/27132609\/04-2001-Acura-MDX-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Below the Interior Color sticker (which tells us that this MDX has &#8220;Grace Beige&#8221; inside), there is a telltale REBUILT FROM SALVAGE stamp in the door jamb.
