The Hyundai Motor Group\u2019s joint venture, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/motional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motional<\/a>, along with Uber, announced Wednesday the launch of their public robotaxi service in Las Vegas. <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-270362\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9669137141129422\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Motional was established in March 2020 through a joint venture (JV) between Hyundai and sustainable tech company, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/aptiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aptiv<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Last summer, we got our <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/10\/06\/uber-deploying-motional-ioniq-5-robotaxis-to-millions-of-riders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first look<\/a> at Motional\u2019s Level 4 autonomous IONIQ5 robotaxi as President and CEO Karl Iagnemma said the collaboration between Hyundai and Aptiv: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>Enables us to manufacture a robotaxi that\u2019s both highly safe and reliable, and is cost-optimized for global production.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Iagnemma added Motional is \u201cfocused on mass commercialization, and the IONIQ5 robotaxi is built for that\u201d based on Hyundai\u2019s E-GMP EV architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Motional <a href=\"https:\/\/motional.com\/news\/motional-and-uber-announce-partnership-autonomous-deliveries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teamed up with<\/a> delivery tech giant Uber to combine technologies in December. Within six months, the partners announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/05\/17\/motional-begins-autonomous-uber-eats-deliveries-in-california-using-ioniq-5-evs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pilot program<\/a> for autonomous Uber Eats deliveries using IONIQ5 robotaxis in the greater Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n<p>To further the relationship, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/uber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uber<\/a> and Motional signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/10\/06\/uber-deploying-motional-ioniq-5-robotaxis-to-millions-of-riders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10-year commercial partnership<\/a> in October to deploy the electric robotaxis for millions of riders and accelerate the wide-scale adoption of robotaxis. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-uber-motional-launch-public-ioniq5-robotaxi-service-in-las-vegas\">Uber, Motional launch public IONIQ5 robotaxi service in Las Vegas<\/h2>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/motional.com\/news\/motional-launches-first-robotaxi-service-uber-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> today, Uber and Motional revealed for the first time that public riders could access the IONIQ5 robotaxi service, which will kick off in Las Vegas, NV. <\/p>\n<p>Akshay Jaising, Motional\u2019s vice president of commercialization, commented on the historic launch, saying: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>Today, Motional becomes the first AV company to conduct all-electric autonomous rides on the Uber network for public passengers. It\u2019s a testament to our technology and the power of our partnership with Uber that we\u2019re able to go from concept to consumer in such a short time. Las Vegas is the first of many cities in which Motional\u2019s AVs will become an everyday transportation option for Uber customers looking for a safe and convenient ride.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the release, the partners are working with vehicle operators now to prepare for a fully driverless commercial service, expected to launch in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The fully electric IONIQ5 robotaxis will be available for UberX and Uber Comfort Electric in select markets, starting in Las Vegas and expanding to Los Angeles at a later (unspecified) date.<\/p>\n<p>With today\u2019s launch, Motional is the first AV company to conduct deliveries and rides on a major network.
