{"id":37941,"date":"2022-12-09T12:04:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T17:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=37941"},"modified":"2022-12-09T12:04:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T17:04:27","slug":"1138091_you-can-now-hail-a-robotaxi-with-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=37941","title":{"rendered":"You can now hail a robotaxi with Uber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s now possible for the first time to book rides in self-driving cars using the Uber app, though only in Las Vegas at present.<\/p>\n<p>The self-driving cars are robotaxis deployed by Hyundai-backed self-driving technology company Motional.<\/p>\n<p>Motional&#8217;s robotaxis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1133431_hyundai-ioniq-5-to-be-used-for-motional-autonomous-ride-hailing-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based on the Ioniq 5 electric crossover<\/a>, have already been active on the Uber Eats network in Los Angeles, as well as the network of rival ride-hailing company Lyft in both Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The vehicles still have a safety driver but Motional expects them to go fully driverless in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FjSXeSwI8Lo\" width=\"560\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Uber users in Las Vegas looking to ride in one of Motional&#8217;s robotaxis need to select UberX or Uber Comfort Electric options for a chance to be matched with a robotaxi. If one is available, the customer will need to do a final opt-in before the trip is confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Together, Uber and Motional plan to create over the next 10 years one of the largest fleets of robotaxis spanning multiple U.S. cities. After Las Vegas, Motional&#8217;s robotaxis will be added to Uber&#8217;s network in Los Angeles, though timing hasn&#8217;t been announced. Additional cities will also be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Uber originally intended to develop its own fleet of robotaxis, but the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1130312_aurora-acquires-uber-s-self-driving-division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold its self-driving division<\/a> to Motional rival Aurora in 2020 following incidents that included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1130312_aurora-acquires-uber-s-self-driving-division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pedestrian being hit and killed<\/a> by one of its prototypes and one of its former engineers pleading guilty to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1124795_ex-uber-engineer-sentenced-to-18-months-for-google-trade-secrets-theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stealing trade secrets while working at Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s now possible for the first time to book rides in self-driving cars using the Uber app, though only in Las Vegas at present.
