Abacon Capital and Vsquared Ventures also chipped in.<\/p>\n<p>Customcells develops and recycles high-performance lithium-ion batteries that power products like cars, medical equipment and fossil fuel development (despite its stated decarbonization goals). The company also makes batteries for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.customcells.org\/products-development\/high-temperature-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">high-heat environments<\/a> north of 122 degrees F. For this funding round, Customcells has a specific aim in mind: accelerating its push into &#8220;e-aviation&#8221; as well as its expansion outside of Germany and into the U.S. and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no question that air travel is a serious <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">climate change<\/a> driver. Still, the sector is a long ways from decarbonization. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmu.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/story\/12787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">2020 paper<\/a> from researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University, NOAA and Oxford found that aviation represents 3.5% of all human activities that drive climate change, per <a href=\"https:\/\/research.noaa.gov\/article\/ArtMID\/587\/ArticleID\/2667\/Aviation-is-responsible-for-35-percent-of-climate-change-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">NOAA<\/a>. Air travel is almost completely reliant on kerosene, which spews greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide) and <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/regulation\/avgas-lead-epa-aviation-san-jose-reid-hillview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">poisons folks with lead<\/a> when it&#8217;s burned.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative to this mess could be all-electric aircraft. S<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">mall electric planes are <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/28\/eviations-all-electric-alice-aircraft-makes-its-maiden-flight\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">already<\/a> <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/26\/pyka-adapts-its-autonomous-electric-plane-for-cargo-runs-with-a-37m-round\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">feasible<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">, yet <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-arent-there-electric-airplanes-yet-103955?xid=PS_smithsonian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">researchers say<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"> batteries today are far <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/electric-planes-are-here-but-they-wont-solve-flyings-co-problem-125900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">too heavy<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"> to power larger planes on their own. The battery-weight challenge explains why some aviation startups are instead exploring <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/alternative+fuel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">alternative fuels<\/a>, including <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/12\/06\/designers-hope-hydrogen-powered-plane-will-fly-halfway-around-the-world-without-refueling\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">hydrogen<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>World Fund partner Daria Saharova called decarbonizing air travel &#8220;a huge uphill battle,&#8221; but argued in a prepared statement that the potential upsides were worth it. The startup&#8217;s chief executive, Dirk Abendroth, dubbed aviation the &#8220;next great decarbonisation challenge&#8221; in a separate statement on the new round.<\/p>\n<p>Customcells has attracted more than just investors. Its current customers include small jet maker <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/07\/28\/the-lilium-electric-jet-will-use-batteries-manufactured-by-germanys-customcells\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Lilium<\/a> as well as &#8220;over half of Germany\u2019s major automotive companies,&#8221; a spokesperson for the startup told TechCrunch.
